Director of Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Services
NATURE OF WORK
The Director of academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Services is one whose primary concern is
to provide oversight in the improvement of learning opportunities through the provision of instructional
leadership to the stakeholders of Wilkes County Schools. The director has the role of decision-maker,
consultant, and specialist in advising administrators, teachers, and other professional personnel. The
AIG Director serves as a member of the instructional services staff charged with the responsibility for
planning, implementing, and evaluating the AIG program relevant to the needs of the student
population in the Wilkes County School System. The AIG Director plans for and supervises curriculum
development and implementation as it pertains to the education of academically and/or intellectually
gifted student in the Wilkes County School System. The director also provides advice and counsel for
teachers and principals on matters pertaining to instruction for AIG students. Under limited supervision,
performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks in monitoring and assisting the AIG Program.
The AIG Director is the direct liaison to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The AIG
Director monitors the overall effectiveness of the AIG program and ensures implementation within
federal, state and local regulations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES















Directs the planning, development, field-testing and evaluation of AIG curriculum;
Directs district-wide instructional-related staff development;
Provides AIG in-service training designed to support implementation of newly developed
curricula;
Supervises preparation of AIG curricular content for instructional materials;
Supervises development of instructional guidelines, policies, and regulations for gifted students;
Interprets AIG statutes and regulations for principals and teachers;
Provided assistance in the interpretation of AIG data to administrators and teachers;
Works in conjunction with the State Department of Public Instruction, the Office of Civil Rights,
and various other agencies to meet the needs of AIG students;
Regularly attends meetings of instructional services team, middle school principals council, high
school principals council, monthly principals meetings and any other deemed necessary;
Works with teachers and staff to ensure AIG curriculum is aligned with North Carolina Standard
Course of Study and/or Essential Standards and is achieving goals;
Reviews current AIG curriculum and recommends changes based on performance data;
Reviews EVASS information;
Maintains good relationships with students, staff, parents and community members;
Exhibits strong leadership skills;
Exhibits a professional and collegial approach to educational programs.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE







Master’s degree in administration or the commitment to attain within a specified time period.
Ability to work constructively within a team environment, as well as the ability to communicate
effectively with administrators, principals, teachers, students and parents.
Exhibits a broad knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration and of
current educational trends in curriculum and instruction.
Demonstrates an ability to manage fiscal, physical and human resources to successfully carry out
the function and programs of the office.
Possesses the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Has attained full licensure in the area of gifted education.
Must be able to multi-task.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS














Works collaboratively with middle and high school coordinators and administrators.
Initiates and oversees AIG curricular and instructional programs designed to improve instruction
and student achievement in elementary, middle and high schools.
Coordinates AIG professional development for K-12 teachers on district approved days.
Works towards developing an improved understanding of AIG adolescents’ educational needs
on the part of teachers, administrators, and parents.
Designs professional development opportunities that align with the district’s mission and goals.
Initiates and maintains effective liaison with other school districts and with independent schools
in order to keep abreast of new educational development and ideas.
Stays abreast of current educational developments as pertains to gifted education and the
literature; participates in the affairs of state and national professional societies.
Maintains contact with specific content area state supervisors.
Assists in developing strategic plans for improving AIG student achievement.
Leads the process of creating and revision of AIG curriculum guides that are inclusive of pacing,
scope and sequence, instructional strategies, sample assessment items, aligned resources and
linkage to North Carolina Standard Course of Study and/or Essential Standards.
Assists principals with school-based staff development plans as needed for gifted education.
Maintains open communication with all levels of school system hierarchy; serves as liaison
between schools and the various departments within the Central Office; maintains regular
contact with other directors to exchange ideas, share information and develop plans.
Serves as a member of the district-wide planning teams.
Performs other related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES





Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures as pertain to K-12 gifted
education.
Knowledge of Wilkes County Schools Board of Education Policies and Procedures.
Knowledge of the organizational and communication channels of Wilkes County Schools.
Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional
organizations and/or federal state and local laws, rules and regulations.
Knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods of implementation and delivery in the area
of gifted education.













Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and/or North Carolina Essential
Standards.
Skill in team building.

Competent computer skills.
Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate large programs.

Ability to analyze test data to implement changes necessary for AIG student growth and
development.

Ability to professionally interact with all members of the community.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
