Directions: Read the short story “Wicked Wilma” by Andrew Frinkle. Answer
questions 5 ̵ 8 based on this story.
Wicked Wilma
Story By: Andrew Frinkle
Wilma was absolutely wicked! She was not a nice little girl at all.
She delighted in seeing others hurt or humiliated. She did mean things to
many people every day of the week.
On Monday, Wilma stuck her tongue out at the bus driver. He was
already having a bad day, and now he felt worse!
On Tuesday, Wilma stepped on Johnny’s lunch box. His sandwich
smashed and his milk carton blew up! Now he had nothing to eat.
On Wednesday, Wilma stuck her foot out and tripped Jenny on the
stairs. Wilma thought it was the funniest thing. Jenny fell and bruised her
knee, so she cried.
On Thursday, Wilma pinched her cat’s ears. It tried to scratch her,
but she was too fast. The cat hated her!
On Friday, Wilma scribbled all over her brother Eric's homework. It
took him hours to do it, but she did not care. He got an “F”!
Everyone was getting very sick of Wilma. She had no care for
anyone but herself. She was so mean that everyone ran away from her.
Mrs. Valez, her teacher, asked the guidance counselor to talk with Wilma.
Her friends and family wrote her letters about how they feel when she does
mean things. They all hoped that one day Wilma would be nice.

A Note on the Rubric
There is no need for a rubric for the first two parts of the chart (main character and setting).
The students will either answer Ella and the playground, or they will not receive points for that part
of the question. The entire item is worth five points—one point for each box. This item will
receive as much weight as other questions in this 20 item test even though it requires higher level
thinking skills. The reasoning for this weight is because this particular Intending Learning Outcome
is only lowly emphasized in the curriculum, so I do not want to over-emphasize it on the
assessment.
Rubric
 (1 point)
 (0 points)
Beginning
The student recognizes that it snows, so the
characters go out to play.
The student does not recognize
that the snow has created the
rising action of the story.
Acceptable: It snows, so Ella goes to play.
Middle
High: It snows, so Ella goes to the
playground near her house.
The student recognizes that while at the
playground, Ella is challenged by more than
one boy to a competition that leads to the
icy slide.
Acceptable: The boys had a contest with
Ella on the slide.
Ending
High: Ella was challenged by the boys to a
game on the playground and especially the
icy slide.
The student recognizes that the third chapter
and the subtitle of the book predict that Ella
wins the competition and she becomes the
Queen of the icy slide.
Acceptable: Ella becomes Queen of the
slide.
High: Ella wins the contest against the
boys and becomes Queen of the icy slide.
Unacceptable: Ella decides to
go play.
The student does not recognize
that the boys’ challenge and her
victory in the third chapter are
connected with the subtitle. So
he or she may just infer a game,
contest, or dare the boys made.
Unacceptable: The boys came
and dared Ella to eat snow.
The student does not recognize
how all the chapter headings
and title of the book are
interrelated. So, he or she may
draw upon prior knowledge to
infer the ending.
Unacceptable: Ella won the
contest and went home.
