October 15th, 2012
District 1A
Colbert County:
** Heather Faulkner: Deshler High School
FACS classes started the year off by introducing FCCLA and what all this organization has to offer. My students
researched on their new iPads inexpensive ideas to give to our teachers to show their appreciation for all their
hard work and to welcome them back to a new school year. They decided to make apples out of coke bottles and
pencils out of rolos and Hershey kisses. I have included a picture.
FCCLA will be selling Yankee Candles as this year’s fundraiser. The fundraiser will begin on September 26 th and end
on October 17th. The funds raised will help purchase wagons for our painted wagon donation to Children’s Hospital
in April.
FCCLA is also pairing up with our schools Career Tech department for Breast Cancer Awareness. During October 8 th
-12th we will have activities every day to help raise awareness and money to donate to the Liz Hurley Foundation.
Our goal this year is $1000.00. The FACS departments Food and Nutrition class will be baking and selling ribbon
cookies throughout that week. FCCLA will be selling pink bracelets daily for $1.00. Each day FCCLA members will
pass out pink items to our student body and faculty. Teachers have volunteered to participate in a “kiss the pig”
game during that week’s pep-rally to help raise money. FCCLA students are also painting and decorating pumpkins
to be auctioned off at that night’s game.
Cullman County:
**Karen Hill: Cullman Area Career Center.
I'm the Culinary Teacher at the Cullman Area Career Center. Cullman County Fair is a wonderful time to
showcase our Programs in our county. We had seven fair exhibits dealing with all areas of our
curriculum. The students love to work on them and it is a great way to include FCCLA. You may need to
call some of the teachers in our county if you would like cell numbers I will give them to you. As you know
after school we can all think a little clearer from 7:30 to 3:00 there are just too many things going on to
think very well.
**Amy Chambers: Hanceville High School
Hanceville High School is a Title 1 School. Each year my students raise money to attend the National
FCCLA meeting. This year I am taking 17 students to Indianapolis. We are raising money by selling Beef
Jerky, Chicken salad lunches, Monogrammed Ribbon Key chains and monogrammed t-shirts. Because we
are making these things (except beef jerky) in classes, our profits are extremely high. This is an
opportunity for students who have never been out of Cullman to get to travel to a major city.
** Cullman County is working with the County Fair, we enter a large fair exhibit, individual items (sewing, crafts,
and food), and we have cattle judging teams. We are having our county beef cook-off in October. My FCCLA
officers are attending JLDC.
**Stephanie Blair: Cold Springs High School
In class, I am teaching personal finance, Life Connections, Creative arts, Teen Dynamics, Teen
Connections, and we also have a zero period. In personal finance, we are going over goals, well-being,
financial being, and we created a interactive bulletin board. Life connections just finished the topic of
family and we did an elderly lab. Elderly lab consisted of students cooking with elderly conditions such as
fingers wrapped loosely with tape for arthritis, glasses with saran wrap, and ear plugs while they were
making mystery muffins. Creative art students are learning how create 3-d drawings. Teen dynamics are
learning about their potential, they created a duct tape wallet for the decision making process. Teen
connections are learning about exploring values, goals, Decision making, and depository institutions.
In zero period we are doing zumba two days a week and FCCLA projects.
**Carin Rains: Cullman High School
*I am taking 38 students to JLDC next week.

*These are events that my FCCLA participated in:
*20 students entered individual exhibits in the Cullman County Fair
*I have a cattle judging team for the fair.
*FCCLA did a booth at the fair with Childhood Hunger as our theme
*We will be participating in our county culinary events- Beef, Sweet Potato, Poultry, and Pork
*Stop the Violence Skate Night with donations going to local charity.
**Whitney Haynes: Fairview High School
*My first period class has decided as a class project that they want to focus on school bullying/violence.
They have already created, distributed, and are now tallying answers from a bullying survey. They plan to
compile the data and share at a school-wide assembly. They are also planning on using their results to get
support from local businesses and churches to host Rachel's Challenge at our school. If you have not
heard of this program, I urge you to look it up, it's amazing! This is a big goal, but these kids are very
motivated by their own experiences of bullying and want to see a change in our school.

also assign dress up days for each day of the week. We attended the JLDC in Birmingham in September
and we are planning to attend the Cluster meeting in Indianapolis, IN. Berry High School FACS class has
been working on a monogramming fundraiser. Students use the embroidery machine to monogram items
students bring in for a FCCLA fundraiser. We are currently making a display for the Fayette County Fair,
which will be held next week.
Franklin County:
**Rachel Agee: Russellville Middle School
Kitchen Equipment Scavenger Hunt-The students participate in a scavenger hunt to look for the kitchen
equipment they have learned about. I have it on the smart board with three rounds and a tie-breaker
round if needed. The students have to KNOW their equipment to be successful during the hunt. The
students really enjoy this and I think it is great to do before our quiz.
Germ City-program provided by a grant through the 4-H extension office. Apriell Burgess, urban regional
extension agent, comes in and provides a FREE, INTERACTIVE
exhibit/demonstration designed to increase awareness of effective hand washing. She comes in and
teaches kids the importance of hand washing in the kitchen as well as everyday life. She teaches the
students the proper way to wash their hands. Then the students must put into action what they have
learned. She has a large black light tent set up. The kids go in after applying a lotion to their hands and
can see the germs glow. She shows students how easy it is to transfer germs by shaking one of their
hands. The kids can see her hands start to glow. The students go wash their hands using the techniques
she taught them. They return to the tent and notice most of their germs are gone, but some still remain.
This program promotes students to use proper hand-washing procedures before every cooking lab. I think
it is great and the students truly benefit!!!
FCCLA Kick-off party-Once students joined, we had ice-cream sundae bar to promote FCCLA.
I always have an activity of some sort everyday to promote learning. I didn’t like it when teachers lectured
all the time, so I strive not to do that. The activities always reinforce what they have been learning. These
are just two examples of what we have done so far this year. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to list all year
to just up to date. I will attach some pictures of my students with germ-city.
**Cindy Coan: Russellville High School
Parenting classes-Love, love, love the website www.babycenter.com for the video library found on this website. There are
short animated video segments on conception, each of the stages of prenatal development, labor and
delivery. Also, actual video of labor and delivery and newborn development and care.
Fashion and Interiors-We are focusing on re-purpose and up-cycle. We are using websites like pinterest to find project ideas
that will re-purpose and/or up-cycle materials the kids already own. The list of ideas for old t-shirts is
amazing.
-Also, in this course we are focusing on careers. The students are learning everything about making a
good first impression to how social media can damage your job prospects, to how to meet a potential
client/customer and establishing an online business using web sites like ebay and Etsy.
Useful websites- www.pinterest.com and www.olioboard.com
Foods and Nutrition-I would recommend the movie/documentary Food, Inc. by Robert Kenner. This is a very interesting look
at the current food supply and the changes and challenges that have occurred over the last 25 years.
Great time to discuss patio gardening and food preservation as well as food safety.
-The Franklin County Cattleman’s Association will donate over 100 pounds of ground chuck and sliced
fajita meat to each FACS program in Franklin County. This is such a help with the expense of foods classes
each year.
FCCLA-Members elected chapter officers.
-“Cupcakes for Claus”- Members will make and sale cupcakes to RHS students during activity period
(Wednesday) each week the entire month of November---- fun fact, Santa will make a surprise visit. The
money raised from this project will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children in Russellville.
- FACS classes will serve as the drop off point for collecting cleaning supplies for the domestic violence
response council
-Teal Toes Ovarian cancer awareness- Distributed sample size teal nail polish to students who
asked for information about ovarian cancer
**Monica Creekmore: Phil Campbell High School
*One thing I do in my classes when we are studying self concept and self esteem is to play music with
positive lyrics. I use the projector to show the lyrics so everyone can read along with the songs. One
example of a song I have used is "The Definition of Me" by Mandisa. The students loved this and it was a
good ice breaker to help the students to open up and talk about the issues they have with themselves. I
chose to use Mandisa as an example and to give a short biography to show how she overcame all of the
negativity and personal insults on American Idol to move forward in her career. She is now successful. I
showed pictures of her and told the class the comments Simon Cowl made to and about her. The
students were surprised at this and said very positive things about her. I was able to use this as an
example of how not to let others define who you are, or who you become. I encouraged them to only
make positive statements about themselves and to work on their self concept and self esteem.
*I also use math in my lessons when possible. When teaching units on cooking, instead of simply giving
them basic equivalents for measurements, I make them have to use their basic knowledge to do the math
functions in order to get the answers. One example of that is: They know 16 tablespoons = 1 cup, and 3
teaspoons = 1 tablespoon. I give them problems such as how many tablespoons are in 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, &1/8
cup and how many teaspoons = 1 cup, and fractions of a cup. I also do this with figuring fluid ounces,
pints, quarts, and gallons.
*While teaching about peer pressure, communication and relationships, I have students work in groups to
write skits about these issues. They then act out the skits in front of the class.
I use technology regularly. Sometimes it is for powerpoints to aid in my lectures. I also give assignments
for students to use the laptops to create powerpoint presentations or do internet research for essays I
have them write.
Lamar County:
**Chelsey White: Lamar Co. High School/Sulligent High School
My name is Chelsey White and I am the only FACS teacher in Lamar County. I teach at Lamar County High School
and Sulligent High School. South Lamar High School in Millport no longer has a FACS program. Here are a few

2. Food and Nutrition Class- Chili cook-off. Judged by a small group of teachers and students. Winners receive a
prize and newspaper recognition.
3. Housing/ Creative Arts Class- Field Trip to Custom Design Wall covering, based in Carrollton, AL.
Statement from Custom Design: We enable our customers the opportunity to create custom wall covering
solutions for their commercial properties. We create one of a kind samples using a screen printing technique to
simulate the gravure process.
We would show your students a unique graphic design position where both artistic and graphic skills are combined
to create art, the process of screen printing, and how texture is put into commercial vinyl. They would participate
in not only learning the process, but also create their own wall covering sample.

Lawrence County:
**Karon Liverett: Hibbett Middle School
Let me introduce myself. I currently teach within the Florence City School System at Hibbett Middle
School which houses the 5th and 6th grades. I am supported entirely through local funds. I have three
5th grade classes and three sixth grade classes. And my classes are limited to 20 students. Yes, I teach
family and consumer science through the elective program known as encore, because we offer more. The
Home Arts program is within a nine week rotation that includes art, chorus, keyboarding, and a career
discovery computer lab.
I focus mainly on sanitation and safety within the home and attempt to lay a foundation of life skills. I
have a classroom that houses 5 kitchens and a sewing lab. I love my job and the enthusiasm of this age! I
am not under the CT umbrella but I attempt to prepare students and encourage them to take higher
classes within the family and consumer science realm. I don't know if this helps but I wanted to let you
know I am out there and I appreciate all you do!

Name: Charity Hutcheson: Section High School
Classes I teach this year are FACS, Parenting, and Food and Nutrition. My classes host the teacher
retirement lunch. FCCLA membership is around 100. We sell cookie dough to support our yearly
activities. We have a FCCLA dance in January. Relay for Life is our big community project. We usually raise
around $3,000. We design Relay for Life t-shirts, host a faculty-student basketball game, sponsor hat day,
and sale moons and stars school-wide. We are about to start working on Star Events for FCCLA which take
place in March.
Name: Sylvia Coleman and Debbie Fanning: Scottsboro High School
Finished the Homecoming Parade with a Mr. and Miss FCCLA, Planning Cans For Charity with FCCLA,
Students will be engaging in Toxic Tales for the ending of October to discourage Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
Students finished a fundraiser with ASPIRE were we raised over $1000 to help with future community
service activities and class supplies. Students have taken on the National Campaign and prepared peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches which were distributed in one of our lower income communities. We have
integrated FCCLA in our classes with the National campaign, membership drive, and guest speakers.
Students are in lively discussions and learning with curriculum and project based education focused on
soft skills and work place and career readiness in mind. On a colleague standpoint, we have had our initial
Advisory board meeting with much success. Discussion was about articulation agreements, credentialing
and networking. We also participated in the County Career Fair along with other schools in the county.
We have reviewed the updates for BIC and begun working on the information needed to prepare
ourselves for the process in 2014. We have also discussed ways to revamp our program for the needs in
our area for college and career ready graduates.
FCCLA 1st block - participated in a service project to make 179 PB&J sandwiches for an area outreach
called Sack Suppers sponsored by Hollis Memorial Church. Every Monday afternoon 240 sack suppers are
made and delivered to neighborhood mobile home parks in an attempt to get food to those who need it.
Students read labels to calculate the number of loaves of bread, jars of Peanut-butter and jelly needed for
the project. We actually planned to make 240, but everyone did not bring their assigned item, so then
students had to recalculate to determine how many sandwiches we could make with the supplies on
hand. The overseer of this outreach joined us to share how Sack Suppers started and how it is sustained.
Students worked in groups to form efficient assembly lines using standard safety and sanitation measures.
Next month we plan to assist with dispersing food to people at the by-weekly food pantry distribution day
at Living Word Ministries. This is part of a hands on No-Child Hungry project.
Other blocks are planning projects to collect can goods and host a family dinner and fun night for their nochild hungry project.
FACS and Fashion students are making embroidered key chains as a fund raiser. Fashion students will be
touring Unclaimed Baggage Center in November and participating in the operation Christmas Child shoe
box project they serve as a collection point for. Students have completed presentations on fashion
history, fashions around the world, fashion designers, sketching, design details and the design process.
and will be studying judging clothing quality and construction.. Potential Employees of Unclaimed
Baggage with these knowledge and skill sets are highly desirable. The tour will emphasize this. Students
will see the sorters, pricers, stockers, etc. at work as well as have the opportunity to discover hidden
designer treasures, and compare quality of workmanship and construction. We hope to have a scavenger
hunt/personal shopper challenge as well.
Parenting and child services students are carrying out weekly projects with area childcare centers who are
our community partners thanks to our new career tech director, Alicia Bell, who worked hard to organize
this for our lab experiences. Students have presented hands-on workshops on Fire Safety, Johnny
Appleseed, and Christopher Columbus. Students are focused on encouraging a love of reading in the at
risk preschool children with interactive one-on-one reading.
Mrs. Coleman and I chaperoned all 9th graders along with my FACS class students as they attended an
interactive hands on career fair sponsored by Impact Learning Center, NACC, community businesses, and
TVA. Students Engaged in activities that gave them a taste of the 73 career fields represented. The child
development program from the Community College was a big hit. Students each engaged in art activities
and science experiences and learned how to use these activities to teach states of matter and fine motor
skill development to children. Extension agents Lead activities in mixing sanitation solution to the proper
strength. Hospice workers taught hand message and shared how they used this to calm and relax patients
in their care. This was an outstanding opportunity.
Child services I students will be participating in a DHR approved APT 10 week course "Going to School"
along with area childcare workers and directors to earn professional development hours and certificate
beginning this Saturday. Students will be submitting their worksheets and test via email to the Child
Resource Network center for evaluation and scoring to earn their certificate. They must score 85% and
this can count as their 1 Internet course graduation requirement that some of my seniors were missing.
Child services I and II students are participating in mentoring activities in elementary classrooms and
community childcare centers 3 days per week. As we have visited these centers I have been thrilled to see
many of my former students working in the teaching and childcare fields. One center director told me that
my students were much better prepared for employment than other applicants. I beamed!
In ADDITION: Please add that child services students are currently creating career posters highlighting
their chosen profession and how the Parenting and child services courses and mentoring opportunities
are connected to those careers. This year’s posters range from pediatrician, child psychologist,
occupational therapist, to teacher or childcare center director so far. They will be displayed in the hallway
to promote the program. Tell everyone I hope they have a successful year!
Mrs. Harriet J. Murray: Gadsden City High FCCLA
We are still recruiting members for this year but already began one of our projects. We sponsored a
Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign here at Gadsden City High. Each morning statistics concerning the
disease were read to the school. On Wednesday, October 10 we were given permission to have a "Pink
Out Day" by our principal. FCCLA members made pink ribbons to pass out to students, teachers awarded
extra points to students who wore pink clothing, and teachers could wear jeans if they wore a pink shirt.
The day was a huge success with about 90 % of the 1600 students & 100 faculty wearing pink!
Name: Brandi Cantrell: Arab High School
At Arab's first trip to compete in STAR Events this summer we won 2 gold metals and 1 silver, we have a
