An Enhanced Catalogue of the Nineteenth-Century Novels Collection
The goal of this project is to produce a complete enhanced catalogue of the 1441 titles in
the Robinson Special Collections Library’s Nineteenth-Century Novels Collection. The
catalogue entries are to be enhanced through the addition of setting, genre, and subject
keywords that have been devised according to the established protocols of the American
Library Association and the Library of Congress. In some instances, new keywords have
been introduced where it has been thought that they reflect the particular nature of the
materials in the collection and are germane to Victorian literature. Another feature of the
enhanced catalogue are descriptors (located in a note section) that provide details of plot or
a sense of the critical reception of the novel in the period. This information has been
resourced from John Sutherland’s Stanford Companion to Victorian Fiction, through reviews
and notices from the newspapers and magazines of the period (accessed through the Gale
NewsVault database), and through other secondary scholarly sources (All of the sources
used are included in this document’s bibliography).
The first stage of the project (conducted from June to August 2014) has aimed provide
enhanced cataloguing for the most represented authors in the collection – the 46 who have
six titles or more titles (representing 20.6% of the 223 authors in the collection). These
authors are listed in an author index. The 531 works of these authors constitute 37% of the
total collection of 1441 titles. 43 of the 46 authors who have six titles or more now have
annotated entries. There are 426 annotated entries in this document, representing 29.56%
of the collection titles.
In its representation of the most represented authors, this document provides a strong
sense of the key types of popular Victorian fiction represented in the collection. The indexes
for subject, genre, and setting provide an indication of these topics. Based on the
cataloguing to date, the collection is strong in historical fiction, military fiction, regional
fiction, sea stories, love stories, didactic fiction, regional fiction, and stories of urban life.
Authors:
*first number represents the number of enhanced catalogue entries, the second the number of titles
in the catalogue overall.
