Session A Course summary for students
Programme title: Energy efficiency for gas-fired and oil fired domestic heating
and hot water systems
Course code:
Aims: Know the requirements for energy efficiency in relation to
gas fired and oil fired domestic heating and hot water systems
Planned learning outcomes:
1. Know the regulatory requirements
and sources of guidance for energy
efficiency standards for gas-fired and
oil-fired heating appliances
connected to ‘wet’ heating circuits
2. Know the requirements of minimum
boiler efficiency standards for gasfired and oil-fired heating appliances connected to ‘wet’ heating circuits
3. Be able to determine if a non-condensing boiler installation would be
acceptable
4. Know the requirement relating to space heating primary circuits type and
design for gas-fired and oil-fired ‘wet’ heating systems
5. Know the compliance standards requirement for hot water storage vessels
6. Know the requirements relating to the preparation and water treatment of hot
water systems and wet central heating systems
7. Know the requirements relating to the commissioning of hot water systems
and wet central heating systems
8. Know the requirements of the minimum standards for the control of gas-fired
and oil-fired wet central heating systems
9. Know the requirements of the minimum standards for insulation of pipework
for gas-fired and oil-fired wet central heating and hot water storage systems
10. Know the requirements relating to stand-alone, glandless heating systems
circulators
Assessment of learning:
Your learning will be informally and formally assessed by:
 Initial self-assessment exercise
 Ongoing discussions during the course to ensure achievement of session
objectives
 Completion of stage worksheets specific to sessions
Session A Course summary for students

Completion of final multiple choice question style assessment
Students on the course will have met pre-requisite requirements. These may be
demonstrated in a number of ways, so it is expected that students will have a range
of experience and prior qualifications.
Summary of sessions
Depending upon the timetable within your training centre, sessions may be held on
separate days/evenings or grouped together over a number of days.
Sessions 1 to 6 cover core learning whilst sessions A, B, C and D focus upon
introducing you to the course, revision and final assessment.
Students will be expected to attend every session.
Session A
During this session you will gain information about course and centre requirements,
take part in an ice breaker, complete a self-assessment exercise and receive course
summary information.
Session 1
During this session you will research and discuss relevant:
 regulatory requirements
 efficiency standards for gas-fired and oil-fired heating appliances connected
to ‘wet’ heating circuits
Session 2
During this session you will research, discuss and complete calculations related to
requirements for:
 gas-fired heating appliances connected to ‘wet’ heating circuits
 oil-fired heating appliances connected to ‘wet’ heating circuits
Session 3
During this session you will research, discuss and complete calculations related to
requirements for:
 non condensing boilers
 space heating primary circuits type and design for gas-fired and oil-fired ‘wet’
heating systems
