Title of post: Communications Officer

Communications and Advocacy Manager

Mission: Peter McVerry Trust is committed to reducing homelessness and the harm
caused by drug misuse and social disadvantage through the principles of the Housing First
model. Peter McVerry Trust provides low-threshold entry services, primarily to younger
persons with complex needs, which offer pathways out of homelessness within a
framework of equal opportunities, dignity and respect.
The Communications Officer role will assist the Communications and Advocacy Manager
in delivering all aspects of the Communications Strategy and will be part of small team
working in a fast moving environment.
Overview of Key Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Assist the Communications and Advocacy Manager to deliver the key objectives of
the Communications Strategy;
2. Assist in meeting the communications needs of the various departments within the
organisation;
3. Provide timely and detailed reports to the Communications and Advocacy
Manager;
4. Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement through ongoing review
of current practices, informed by feedback from key stakeholders and best
practice.

Media
-
Assist with the compilation of weekly, monthly and quarterly media reports on
issues related to Peter McVerry Trust and its work;

Assist with the preparation and distribution of press statements and information
notes;

Be an effective point of contact for media enquiries and develop relationships with
key media/journalists;

Identify opportunities to build awareness of Peter McVerry Trust’s work, including
the issues faced by individuals accessing our services;
-
Support the organisation of press conferences and photocalls.
Online & Digital
-
Monitor and update Peter McVerry Trust websites;
-
Identify opportunities to strengthen and improve the effectiveness of Peter
McVerry Trust’s online platforms;
-
Regular monitoring of analytics including generating weekly review reports;
-
Identify content for and plan social media updates;
-
Monitoring online chatter relevant to Peter McVerry Trust;
-
Assist in the creation of materials for online platforms;
-
Support the development of new digital materials including working with third
party providers.
Marketing

Assist and support the Fundraising Team to deliver the key objectives of
organisational strategy in relation to promotion of fundraising events and appeals,
development of fundraising materials and donor communications;

Assist in the implementation of the annual advertising and marketing strategy
including working with advertising agencies and designers.
Other Communication Activities
-
Assist with the development of Peter McVerry Trust publications including annual
reports, newsletters, and position papers;
-
Undertake any other duties consistent with the position as may be assigned by the
Communications and Advocacy Manager.
Requirements:








Commitment to the vision and mission of Peter McVerry Trust.
Third level qualification in journalism, public relations or similar; or equivalent
experience;
Minimum 3 year relevant experience in communications, public affairs, marketing
role or similar;
Strong communications and interpersonal skills;
High professional standards;
Ability to work in collaboration with others;
Ability to work in pressurised environments;
Creativity and enthusiasm; flexibility and adaptability.
Desirable:




Experience of working with designers and advertising agencies;
Experience of working with Irish print and broadcast media;
Experience of working or volunteering in the non-profit sector;
Understanding of social issues and homelessness in Ireland.
