AERO OLYMPICS RULES October 4th Saturday (12 pm – 4 pm) Aero Olympics Hashtag: #aaeolympics Keeping track of Scores: After each event, the SGT coordinator for the event will write the team’s name, number, and event score on a post-it note and sign it. The team will then take the post-it note to the head SGT scorekeeper, who will input the score into a Google Spreadsheet. This sheet will only be editable by the head scorekeeper but the link will be available for participants to check their scores throughout the event. 1. Team Structure Teams of 2 - 4 students from all majors and all years. a. Teams with students from at least two different majors or two different years bonus 5 points b. High school teams will announce what majors they want to pursue in college and the bonus points will be assigned as in (a) bonus 5 points 2. Parachute Drop for Strength a. Teams will build parachutes with the given materials in 20 minutes (plastic bags, balloons, tape, string, angel hair pasta, cotton balls). b. Before the drop, the teams will carefully put a single angel hair pasta in the parachute. c. Maximum possible points: 20 points if the spaghetti doesn’t break. d. The longest length in cm of the angel hair pasta after breaking multiplied by 2 3. Trivia Round a. Total of 30 trivia questions about aeronautics, astronautics and other general topics (Purdue, sports, etc.) b. Two rounds of 30 minutes each (15 questions per round; 30 questions total over 1 hour) c. One minute to answer the questions without any usage of technology and one minute for the volunteers to grade the answer. d. Participating team must write their team number, question number, and answer on a small piece of paper and hand it in to SGT volunteer at the end of each one-minute round. e. Each correct answer is worth 1 point. f. Maximum possible points: 30 points 4. Paper Airplane for Accuracy a. Teams will make a paper airplane with the given materials in 20 minutes. b. Bull’s Eye with three zones (three progressively larger squares) i. Definition of “zone landing”: If the forward-most point of the paper plane is in the zone, that zone is what is scored. c. Teams with airplanes landing in zone 1 (center zone) 20 points. d. Teams with airplanes landing in zone 2 (middle outer zone) 15 points. e. Teams with airplanes landing in zone 3 (outermost zone) 10 points. 5. Final Round a. Teams will randomly choose a name of an aircraft from a hat. b. If the team can find the location of the model/photo of that aircraft in 5 minutes, they will get 10 points. c. No pictures can be used from the AAE lab in ARMS 2106. 6. Point Evaluation a. The team with the highest score will be the winner. 7. Prizes Awarded a. 1st place winners: $25 Amazon Gift Card per winner b. 2nd place winners: $15 Amazon Gift Card per winner c. 3rd place winners: $10 Amazon Gift Card per winner d. $200 in gift card prizes total
