2. Objective(s): Determining the fish species composition and structure in Ban Thach river,
Phu Yen province. Specifying the distribution characteristics and current status of fishing to
propose measures for protection and sustainable development of fish resources.
3. Creativeness and innovativeness: The species composition and distribution of fish fauna
in this area have not been significantly studied before.
4. Research results: Through the process of collecting samples and identifying the
composition of fishes in Ban Thach river, Phu Yen province, 115 fish species belonging to 85
genera, 47 families and 14 orders were identified. Among them there were 7 species belonging
to level VU (Vulnerable) which were recorded in the Vietnam Red Book 2007, 28 species
belonging to economic fish groups and 5 exotic fish species were recorded.
According to the species composition and structure, Perciformes was the most
dominant in families with 21 families (occupied 44,68% of total families). The Cyprinidae
reaching 29 species, Beloniidae reaching 6 species, Mugilidae reaching 6 species, Gobiidae
reaching 5 species, Corbitidae reaching 4 species, are dominant about species.
The analysis results on fish species composition in Ban Thach river, Phu Yen province
showed that there were 3 ecological fish groups which group of freshwater fish (with 57
species and 14 families), brackish water group (42 species and 21 families) and saltwater fish
groups (16 species and 12 families).
The status of fishing in Ban Thach river, Phu Yen province was happening very
excessively and unreasonably. The using destruction tools for fishing was the main reason for
the decline in resources fish in this area.

6. Effects, transfer alternatives of reserach results and applicability:
The research results of this thesis gave significantly important contribution to
supplement the valuable scientific datas on species composition and distribution of fishes in
Ban Thach river, Phu Yen province and measures for conservation and sustainable
development of fisheries resources.
