That’s because the Aquarium Pyramid at Moody Gardens brings four oceans of the world right before your eyes. With 1.5 million gallons of water and more than 10,000 marine animals, the Aquarium Pyramid showcases the complex beauty of the North Pacific, South Pacific, South Atlantic and Caribbean in four exhibits within the 10-story blue-glass aquarium building. The pyramid also includes tide pools, “touch tanks” and unique viewing opportunities as well as underwater classrooms and learning experiences for guests of all ages. “The Aquarium Pyramid is one of the largest and most fascinating aquariums in Texas,” said Greg Whittaker, animal husbandry manager at Moody Gardens. “You can see and learn about everything from penguins, to sharks to seals as well as thousands of species of fish and plant life.” The popular Aquarium Pyramid, a $50 million investment that opened in 1990, is divided into four regions, corresponding to the points on a compass. Each region represents a different area of the oceanic world. In the North Pacific exhibit, guests can observe playful seals and sea lions before continuing on to witness the colorful fishes and beautiful coral reefs of the South Pacific exhibit. King Penguins and five other cold-weather species entertain guests for hours as they play and feed in the frigid South Atlantic exhibit. For a unique experience, guests can participate in a “Penguin Encounter” and meet a real penguin up close. In the walk-through tunnel of the Caribbean exhibit, sharks swim above guests’ heads for a unique view of these fascinating creatures. The Aquarium Pyramid is just one of many attractions at Moody Gardens, which is also home to a Rainforest Pyramid, Discovery Museum, Giant Screen 3D Theater and 4D Special FX Theater, as well as a white-sand beach and Colonel Paddlewheel Boat.
