STOP 3 MILLION TONNES OF HAZARDOUS WASTE COMING TO SKEM Yes! 3 MILLION TONNES over the next 20 years THE PROBLEM Whitemoss Ltd thinks Skelmersdale is an ideal place to dump their hazardous waste. It is called hazardous waste because it is a hazard to human health. Many scientific studies show that hazardous waste can cause cancer, birth defects, cardiovascular and respiratory problems – but still they want it here in Skem. A few Skemmers are not going to stop this on their own. We need Skem united as one powerful force. PLEASE HELP STOP IT WE CAN WIN THIS As we did in 2012 when donations amounted to £4,500 and were used to stop the Whitemoss tip from doubling in size. NOW THE COMPANY WANT THE TIP TO BE 4 TIMES THE SIZE. WIND DIRECTION Wind direction in Skelmersdale is from the South and South West which means most of Skem is downwind from the proposed site. You can help stop it in 4 ways BEFORE 28 FEB register and fill in the online form using project reference WS010003. To object go to: http://infrastructure.planningportal. gov.uk/projects/northwest/whitemoss-landfill-westernextension/ Get together with your friends to help them fill in the online objection form Ask every member of your family to be involved Note the distance from housing Hazardous waste tip and wind direction WHAT TO SAY Tell the planners how the tip has affected your life, your home, your town. Do you like the idea of having lorry loads of Schedule III waste dumped near YOU and your children? You can also tell them you would like to go to the hearing which will be at a local venue. Extending the tip will undermine genuine recycling and treatment of hazardous waste. Anyone who thinks they are too small to make a difference has never been in a tent with a wasp TOO CLOSE TO PEOPLE Stocks Hall Nursing Home, houses around Old Town Way, Whitemoss Road and the Liverpool Road football pitches are within a few hundred metres downwind of the hazardous waste tip. Winds from the south and south west are likely to blow hazardous waste particles over 80% of Skem and we say dumping toxic waste for over a period of 38 years could have an impact on people’s health. Some health officials claim it is safe, but the truth is that scientific study after study links waste dumps like Whitemoss to increases in serious diseases. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Skem is already surrounded by 9 waste tips and the health of people in Skem needs improving not made worse. If each lorry delivers 3 tonnes of waste, that’s an extra million lorries burning toxic diesel fumes over Skem As Skem is on the verge of a major town development, a toxic waste tip will deter inward investment that brings jobs. ENVIRONMENTAL LAWYER NEEDED We need to employ an environmental lawyer to represent us at every stage, attend hearings with the planning inspectorate - to act on behalf of the community. This is likely to cost around £5,000. PLEASE DONATE ENOUGH Please donate. Every £1, £5 or £10 donation is of enormous help. £50 would be brilliant. Please send what you can.
