Research hints
Searching the library catalogue (E-library) - It’s easy to find – open DID and click on the link in the menu
on the right hand side.
 The 'Keyword' field searches all the following fields at once. Therefore, if you enter your search
term in the 'Keyword' field the e-Library Web OPAC will search through titles, notes, authors,
subjects, series, editors, publishers, call numbers, illustrators and media types to find matching
results.
 If you are looking for a specific author, title or subject, use the relevant fields. This is essential for
some subjects e.g. if you are looking for information on Melbourne and you type Melbourne in the
keyword field you will receive over 3,000 hits as many publishers are located in Melbourne and this
information is included in the catalogue entry.
 If you are looking for video resources, use the dropdown box in the media field to select video (this
includes videos, DVDs and online resources).

Keywords -just like Google, be as specific as you can. If you have no success, then you may need to
broaden your terms.
Searching the Internet
www.google.com
We all love Google and it’s often the only search engine many people use. Google is great but can often
give us too many hits – where do you start! It gives us the choice of searching the whole web or web pages
from Australia and also allows us to narrow down our search by using advanced search, image and groups
search, book search, news search, etc. and to restrict them by date or year/s. When multiple keywords are
entered, all keywords are treated as "AND" queries. See the attached sheet for some hints on restricting your
search.
Other search engines
http://www.bing.com/
Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search) is a web search engine from Microsoft.
Bing helps you to researching by offering suggestions for related searches in the left-hand column and giving
various search options across the top of the screen.
http://www.virtuallrc.com/
The Virtual Learning Resources Centre indexes thousands of the best academic information websites,
selected by teachers and library professionals worldwide, in order to provide to students and teachers
current, valid information for school and university academic projects!
The Virtual LRC uses a form of a Google Custom Search Engine. This means that almost all of the search
strategies employed with Google will work for Virtual LRC. The major difference is that while Google
searches the entire Internet, the Virtual Learning Resources Centre and related websites search only a much
smaller number of academic websites previously recommended by teachers, librarians and library and other
educational bodies.
UMRL Online databases
The Australia/NZ Reference Centre combines Australasian magazines, newspapers, newswires and
reference books to create the largest collection of regional full text content available to libraries in Oceania.
