Do you have a love for equines? Do you have an interest in US policy? United States Senator (D-LA) Mary Landrieu is offering a Summer 2014 Internship Open to all University of Delaware students. US Senator Mary Landrieu is offering a 10-week summer internship, to be held in her office. Senator Landrieu has a passion for horses and is very involved in the equine policies and legislation in Washington, D.C. In 2007 the Senator introduced bipartisan legislation to ban horse slaughter in the United States for human consumption. The "Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act," S. 311, was introduced to amend the Horse Protection Act. In 2009, Senator Landrieu championed bill language to prohibit the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from using taxpayer dollars for the destruction of healthy, unadopted horses and burros. Recently, in 2013 Senator Landrieu pushed for a permanent ban on horse slaughter at the Horses on the Hill event which was co-hosted by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). You DO NOT have to be an animal science student for this opportunity, but you do have to have a passion for horses. Requirements: o o o o Must have a GPA of 3.5 or greater Ability to begin internship within 1-2 weeks of the end of school semester A desire to work hard and learn An interest in the US government and policies pertaining to equines To apply: Email the following in a WORD document to Nemeclm@udel.edu by March 1, 2014. A decision will be made by March 29, 2014. o Send a resume AND o A 2-page statement that includes: A short summary of your equine experience How the internship will contribute to your professional development How you will contribute to the internship program Note: In order for this internship to meet with DLE requirement, students must register for ANFS 464. You can speak to an academic advisor in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences about ANFS 464. However, if you do not need DLE or do not want “credit” for the experience, you can just include the experience in your professional resume.
