Project Details
Project Description and Big Idea:
Students will explore, research and learn about the Rise, Decline and
Legacy of Ancient Rome. Using the learning targets for Ancient Rome,
students will better understand why ancient Rome succeed and failed as a
civilization.
Learning Targets:
1. Students will understand how geography affected the development of
Rome.
a. How did the physical location of Rome affect its development
as a city?
b. How did it help Rome in its military efforts?
i. Defense from invaders
ii. Base of operations for military campaigns
c. What resources did they have and how did the resources affect
Rome’s success?
i. How did this affect trade? What did they have to trade?
ii. What did they need from other regions?
d. How did geography help Rome to succeed? Did it play a role in
Rome’s downfall? If so, how?
2. Students will understand what the government of early Rome was
like. Students will be able to explain ways in which our government is
similar to ancient Rome.
a. How was the government structured? Can you draw a diagram
of the parts of government and explain it?
b. How did people get to be “in charge”?
c. What role did citizens play in ancient Roman government?
d. How were laws and rules made? How were they enforced?
e. How was ancient Roman government similar to our
government?
f. What aspects of ancient Roman government helped it to
succeed? Did the government in ancient Rome play a role in
Rome’s downfall? If so, how?

3. Students will understand the role of religion and religious beliefs in
ancient Rome.
a. Explain what religion was like in ancient Rome:
i. How was it organized?
ii. Who was involved in the structure of religion in ancient
Rome?
b. What were the religious beliefs held by the people of ancient
Rome?
c. How did those religious beliefs affect daily life in ancient Rome?
d. How did the development of religion in ancient Rome affect the
history and practice of religion in the “western world”?
i. What religions began because of ancient Rome’s
religions?
ii. How did religion spread from ancient Rome due to
cultural borrowing and sharing?
e. Explain how the role of religion and religious beliefs factor into
the success of ancient Rome? Did the role of religion cause
ancient Rome to fail? Explain.
4. Students will understand how inventions and discoveries from ancient
Rome impact our lives today.
a. What were the inventions and discoveries from ancient Rome?
b. How were they used in ancient Rome?
c. Provide examples of where these inventions and discoveries
can be seen in our world today outside of Rome.
d. Please select at least three of these inventions and discoveries
from ancient Rome and explain how each impacts our lives
today:
i. How are they used today?
ii. Have they been modified or changed over time? If so,
how?
iii. How would life be different if each invention or discovery
had never been created?
e. How do inventions and discoveries play a role in the success of
Rome? Did they have any negative effects which caused
ancient Rome to fail? Explain.

5. Students will understand how leaders from ancient Rome affected
history.
a. Who were the major leaders of ancient Rome?
b. How and why were they able to rise to power?
c. What impact did their leadership have on ancient Rome:
i. On their governmental structure?
ii. On ancient Rome’s relationships with other countries?
iii. On the life of the citizens of ancient Rome? (Please be
sure to explain this question thinking of the different
classes of citizens.)
d. Which leader from ancient Rome do you think affected history
the most? Why do you think so?
e. How did each leader play a role in the success or failure of
ancient Rome?
Task:
You will focus on one of the learning targets listed above, research it to
answer the questions posed and any others that you may think of while
researching. Then you will tie that information back to the Big Idea about
the success and failure of the Roman Empire.
After completing your research, your task is to create a technology-based
project that demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of that
learning target, as well as the Big Idea. You will present your findings to the
class.
Presentation Options:
There is a list of presentation options listed below, but you are welcome to
propose another technology-based project of your choice.

Criteria:
 Project proposal completed and accepted prior to beginning project
 Collaboration with partner or classmates is evident
 Completed project demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the
learning target chosen as a focus.
 A minimum of 5 credible resources are used
 Textbook (Chapters 13 and 15)
 At least one other credible book
 At least two credible websites
 Daily work log completed
 Detailed research notes completed for each resource
 Resources form completed
 Self-assessment completed thoughtfully
 Clear evidence of achievement of the learning target
 Documented collaboration
Credit:
 2 points possible per workday
 Full credit for being on task, collaborating, and using resources
 100 points for final project
 Check rubric for more specific details, expectations, and
responsibilities for the final project.
