(Prof. Geeta Rai) Reminiscence The Alumni Association of Education, BHU, honors its illustrious alumni who have worked hard to give the Faculty of Education, BHU the shape it is in today. This section ‘Reminiscence’ newly introduced in the News letter, where Alumni share their memories with the coming generations, brings the memoirs by Dr. Purnima Kumari Varshneya, who is working at the Department of Education, from Arya Mahila. Reminiscence 2 This was a wonderful experience of ‘learning by doing’. Memories are endless and reminiscence bring both smiles and sadness. Today I feel proud that I was blessed with teachers who not only made me a good teacher but also a patriot and a real human being. Purnima Kumari Varshneya Rajeshwar Upadhyaya Memorial Lecture I have very fond memories of my student life, particularly the time that was spent at the Faculty of Education, BHU. During those days the Classes of M.Ed. used to run in the small one storied building behind the central office. Saroj, (Dr. Saroj Bageshwar, VCW) Deepa (Prof. Deepa Saxena, WC, BHU) and I used go by Rickshaw from Lanka through the green lanes of the BHU campus. During the summers the exquisite beauty of the paths bordered by the Gulmohars in full bloom and the petals strewn over the roads, is still vivid in my memory. There was a beautiful lawn in front of the building. Many a winter afternoon was spent in those lawns in girlish giggles between endless studies. The days of B.Ed. were of mirth, glittering joy and hard work. Vijay Bahadur Pathak Sir was our PT instructor. He constantly tried to make us stand in queues as 1-2, 1-2. Mischievously, Shami and Saroj never got it right. The class used to be over before Sir could proceed any further. Dr. S.N. Chatterjee taught us during our B.Ed and before our final teaching he used to correct each of our lesson plans and make us practice it repeatedly. There was lack of many technological amenities but the sincerity of our teachers overcame the hurdles and gave us the impetus to move forward. Clay modeling was taught to us by Ram Pyare Singh Sir. During B.Ed. we made many small birds, bears and elephants of clay. The classes were taken in the shade were we today run the classes of environmental education. The Association takes pride in organising the II ‘Rajeshwar Upadhyaya Memorial lecture’ in memory of late Professor Upadhyaya annually. The second memorial lecture will be delivered by Professor Dr. M. D. Thomas, Director, National Commision for Communal Harmony, New Delhi. during the first plenary session in the International conference on Education for Achieving Millennium Development Goals on 16th November 2013. The first memorial lecture was organized on 15th November 2012. It was delivered by Prof. Ram Janam Singh, (Ex-Vice Chancellor, MGKVP Varanasi) This lecture has been organised at the behest of the family of Professor Upadhyaya and has been sponsored by his sons. They have contributed a sum of Rs. 54.000/- for the organisation of the memorial lecture. The Alumni thankfully acknowledges the contribution to mark the memory of one as great as him. She was Nostalgic and remembered the day of her Admission to the Faculty which was 16th of July 1968, when the Faculty was known as the ‘Teachers Training College’ or TTC in short. She remembered her friends Dr. Uma Varshneya, Dr. Mridula Tondon and recalled how gullible they were. She expressed her gratefulness to her teachers who supported her and guided her. She made a special mention of Dr. S.N.Chatterjee who reassured her and encouraged her when she was on the verge of gibing up her B.Ed. studies. She remembered Prof. R.K. The Dr. Daya Ram Vishwakarma Best Research Paper Award for the year 2012 was awarded to Mr. J.P. Singh for his paper entitled “Impact of Yogasana on Short Term Memory of Children with Intellectual Impairment” published in “Disabilities and Impairments” vol26 No.1 2012, ISSN 0970356X.. The “Prof. Sudha Prakash Best Research Paper Award” 2012 has been awarded to the paper entitled “An Analysis of Supervisors’ Written Comments during Practice Teaching Programme (PTP) of B.Ed. Students” authored by Mr. Waseem Ahmad (II author), Mr. Dheeraj Kumar Pandey (III author) and Mr. Mukesh Kumar Singh (IV author) These Awards were given personally by Dr. Daya Ram Vishwakarma and Prof. Sudha Prakash to the awardees. Both awardees gave brief introductions of their papers. During the meet Alumni from far and near shared their experiences and expressed their good wishes for the Association. Mr. Waseem Ahmad suggested that the Alumni should be issued cards which will mark their membership and help in identifying them even after very long. Mr. Amit Kumar Verma (Research Scholar, Faculty of Education, BHU) put forward the request of a separate tab on the website the Association, www.aaebhu.com, that would list the special achievements of its Alumni. Several Alumni were of the view that the Alumni Meet is overshadowed by the event (seminar, conference etc.) along with which it is schedules and that the Meet should be organised separately at a different time. Another suggestion that was appreciated by all was that there should be occasions for the current students of the Faculty to interact with the senior Alumni of Faculty through the Association. A senior Alumnus expressed concern over the inability of the Faculty to cater to the Secondary Education as much as should be. The members were of the view that the Association should organise at least one workshop each year for neighbouring school teachers. Such workshops should reorient the teachers towards the innovations in Secondary 4 Education and revamp their passion for their profession. It was suggested that the papers awarded by the Best research paper awards should be uploaded on the website so that all could see it and be inspired. The members were invited to send their nominations for various alumni awards for the session 2011-12, to the General Secretary of the association with full bio data and related details latest by 15th July 2013. The discussion was followed by the presidential address of Prof. H.C. S. Rathore who was to take charge as Dean, Faculty of Education, soon. He assured the members that as next Dean he would shoulder the responsibility to energise and revitalize the Faculty. He said that excellence is a steady attempted thing and the Alumni Association of BHU, is steadily headed towards it. He emphasized the association’s role in organising seminars and bringing together the alumni, making them think about the ways to uplift the society. He then mentioned the following agendas that the members of the association needed to address: 1. Organising Seminars 2. Uplifting the academic standards of the New- Letter. 3. Developing an Interactive web- page. 4. Upgradation of the faculty website. 5. Free online access to books and journals in the library for alumnus. He shared the fact that, since most of the students from the faculty are turning into teachers not teacher educators, they are sidelined from the association’s reach. There is a need to include them and make the experience fruitful for them too. Every year at least one workshop should be organised to identify and train them about the innovations and creativity that these alumni members can apply in schools. He promised that during the session two such programmes will be organised. He quoted his teacher by saying “Shikshak ko apne vidyarthiyon ko apna anndat samajhna chahiye. He promised to fulfil his duty as a teacher and said that he will be instrumental in the growth of the institution. The meeting ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh.
