Annual Photography Competition Terms & Conditions The University of Stirling invites you to submit photographs in its Annual Photography Competition for 2016. The competition is open to students, staff and alumni of both the University of Stirling and Forth Valley College. Theme – One Stirling ‘When Saturday Comes’ You may submit TWO entries EACH of the following categories: PHOTOGRAPHS FILM: 15 seconds IPHONEOGRAPHY: images taken on a phone camera and/or Instagram We would like the competition to reflect the talent and creativity of our students and alumni to a wide audience, both on our campus and beyond. The winning and runner up photographs/Films/Iphoneography images will feature in an exhibition to be displayed in Pathfoot Building which currently houses some of the most important pieces within the Stirling University Art Collection. The exhibition will be launched with the Prize Giving Award Ceremony which will take place on Monday 21st March 2016. Upload your photograph(s) to the Competition website at http://www.stir.ac.uk/photography-competition/ or send a link to the film by the deadline date 28th February 2016. Films should be hosted on Flickr. Each category section can be accessed from a drop down menu. How will it be judged? Once the competition has closed all entries will be viewed by the Photography Competition Steering Group. Ten entries from each category will be shortlisted by the Steering Group and sent to the judging panel with the winners to be decided on Monday 7th March 2016. Please read them carefully as failure to comply may lead to disqualification of your photograph(s) and/or film: 1. Eligibility: The competition is only open to amateur photographers who are students, staff or alumni of the University of Stirling or Forth Valley College. Entrants who do not meet the criteria will be disqualified from that competition. Winners will be notified in person. Winners must also supply a high resolution copy of their winning image and/or files of their film for printing and presenting purposes. 2. Judging: The decision of the Chairman of the judging panel is final. Competition entries will be judged by a panel of judges with the following criteria: Relevance to category topic How well you've interpreted and captured the concept of the theme. Technical execution How well you've captured the image in terms of exposure, focus/sharpness, depth of field, colour and/or tonal rendition, contrast and lighting. Originality/Creativity How well you've translated your vision into an image/film. Does the photographer/film show some creative thought or original idea in the making of this? Composition How well the elements within your image are framed as a 'complete' photograph. Content/Message How well you've created an appealing visual discourse able to tell a story. At a minimum, does the photo make a statement that you can articulate? Does the photo elicit an emotion? In other words, can you relate to the subject or the situation? University/College Publicity The appropriateness of the image for university/college publicity. The University of Stirling and Forth Valley College reserve the right to withhold prizes if, in the opinion of the judges, the quality of entries falls below the standard required. Prizes are non-transferable. 3. Uploading images/film Photographs/Film must be uploaded by the deadline specified above. Photographs/Film must be uploaded to Flickr. Entrants are permitted to upload a maximum of two photographs/film in each category. Each image/film can only be uploaded once: duplicates will be removed. Each category has a section on the competition website accessed from a drop down menu and photographs must be uploaded to the correct section to be eligible for judging. You must give your photograph(s)/film a title and not a number. Each entrant must complete the online application form and all current students must include their Institution and student registration number on that form. 4. Copyright and grant of license By uploading a photograph you certify that it is your own work, created in 2015/16, you are the sole owner of it and that you own the copyright of that photograph. The University of Stirling and Forth Valley College do not accept any liability for the publication of unlawfully reproduced images. By uploading a photograph, you grant to the University of Stirling Limited and Forth Valley College, the non-exclusive right to reproduce it for any purpose at any time in any media with attribution, including without prejudice to the foregoing generality, in University/College publicity material, on the University/College website, in exhibitions and for the image to be stored within the University/College archives. Film Submissions - Film entries containing sampled music or images must ensure that they adhere to UK copyright laws. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that acquire relevant copyright approval for their submission. Publicity The short-listed entrants and winners consent to the use of their image/film, name and/or photograph in any publicity carried out by the University of Stirling and, Forth Valley College, without further compensation. 6. Technical specifications Source material or proof of permission to use must be made available on request by the University of Stirling and photographs must comply with technical specifications as follows: Computer-generated images will not be accepted, but entries may be altered or enhanced by computer software, i.e. Images may be cropped, have their colour, tone and contrast altered, or use some form of filtering. Images should be submitted as jpgs. Each jpg should be a maximum of 300dpi and 5MB in file size, with your name, student registration number (current students only) and the subject in the title. The University of Stirling takes no responsibility for corrupted or late entries.
