looking at the various ways it is being, has been or indeed was, repurposed and re-invented. Organisers hope to bring together
researchers at various stages of their careers, both professional
and postgraduate, working on any and every aspect of the folklore
of Ireland, its reappropriation and dissemination, and proposals are
welcome from researchers in the fields of Agriculture,
Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Dance, Drama, Ecology,
Film Studies, Folklore, Geography, History, History of Art,

SEMINAR: PUBLICLY ENGAGED RESEARCH
FOR PhD STUDENTS
PG Update 18th – 22nd February 2013
Interested in how to make your research relevant to potential
employers? Then it might be worth signing up for a PG training
workshop ‘Making an Impact? Publicly Engaged Research for
postgraduates’ scheduled for 25 February.
The workshop will be
led by Beatrice Korc, Director of the Science and Society
Department at the University of Lyon in France. The session will
help you understand your role as a publicly engaged researcher in
the future and provide insight into the needs of organisations in the
community to which your research might contribute.
After more than 15 years working as film producer and director, in
2009 Beatrice Korc took up a position as Head of Science and
Society at University of Lyon, France. Beatrice also has
considerable experience working on projects linking scientific
research, culture and the creative industries. Next week she will
be delivering a seminar to support Queen’s postgraduates to
consider how they can make an impact with their research through
public engagement. Because of high levels of interest in the
seminar a few more places will be made available so if you’re
interested check QSIS. For more information check QSIS or
contact e.martin@qub.ac.uk.

HIGGINSON LEADERSHIP AWARD: Deadline 25
April 2013
All currently enrolled students or alumni of QUB are eligible to
apply for the Higginson Leadership Award. The purpose of the
award is to encourage a sense of social responsibility and
inspirational leadership among students and alumni of the
University, and to support stand alone activities or ventures, rather
than participation in existing projects, which will demonstrate
initiative and the ability to inspire or act as a role model for others.
Preference will be given to projects or proposals involving
developmental or humanitarian aid overseas, in a post-conflict
environment. Applicants must either be enrolled Queen’s students
or Queen's alumni at the time of application. Awards made are
normally in the region of £300 - £1800.
Students who have received the Higginson Leadership Award in
recent years have led teams on projects to build resource centres
and help impoverished communities in Romania, Kenya, Bolivia,
Thailand, and Uganda. The deadline is 4:30 pm on 25 April
PG Update 18th – 22nd February 2013

QUEEN'S MINDFULNESS GROUP
Queen’s Mindfulness Group meets 1.15pm – 1.45pm on Mondays
(Elmwood Learning and Teaching Centre/SR4) and Thursdays
PG Update 18th – 22nd February 2013
(Snack Bar, SU). This is a quiet space open to all students and
staff to practice mindfulness.
Mindfulness is about paying deliberate, careful attention to what is
going on in your body, your mind and your immediate environment.
The practice can help us to see situations more clearly and
respond more effectively to difficult situations.
Attendance is on a ‘drop in’ basis with no pre-booking necessary,
however, on your first visit you may want to go a few minutes early
to receive some simple instructions. If you have any queries,
contact Clare on c.mcfadden@qub.ac.uk.
