Donations to eye team to enhance patient care
The League of Friends of Warwick Hospital has kindly purchased a new piece of technology
to the Ophthalmology (eye) Department at Warwick Hospital which will assist the department
to enhance patient care.
The PASCAL Laser, which cost £79,000, is used to treat patients with diabetic retinopathy
(damage to the retina). The laser treatment helps to seal new blood vessels and prevents
the further growth of them as they bleed into the eye causing a loss of vision.
This laser is especially effective in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy in young patients as
it can be used as a treatment to prevent visual loss. In addition to the other benefits it also
preserves the peripheral vision (images outside of the direct line of vision).
Another benefit of this equipment is that the treatment time is reduced from 45 minutes to
five minutes and is much less painful for the patient. Therefore the department has been
able to see and treat more patients in a shorter amount of time.
The League of Friends presented the equipment to the department including Mrs Uma
Thakur, Ophthalmology Associate Specialist who uses the machine.

Mrs Uma Thakur, Ophthalmology Associate Specialist said “I would like to offer my
sincere thanks to the League of Friends for donating this piece of equipment. It has already
made a significant difference to the treatment of our patients.”
Dianne Robinson, Chair of the League of Friends said “The League of Friends work
tirelessly to raise funds to support the patients and staff at Warwick Hospital. We are
delighted to have been able to help the Ophthalmology Department with this latest piece of
equipment.”
