Use potholders or oven mitts. Put a potholder, trivet, or kitchen towel between hot items and counters or furniture. Test temperatures before picking something up (ie- pot lid or baking sheet). Turn pot/pan handles in. Use the back burner if possible. Open oven and move items in oven carefully. Open hot lids with caution to avoid steam burns. Wear an apron. Watch your reach. Tie hair back. Avoid baggy long sleeves Knife Safety Store knives properly and away from small children. Move knives away from counter edges. Cut mindfully, pay attention. Cut away from yourself. Use a cutting board. Wait until you are ready to wash a knife before putting it into the dish water. Use the proper knife for the job. Large items: chef's knife Small items or detailing: paring knife, small utility knife (pare, pair, pear) Carry knives point down at your side. Slips and Falls #1 cause of household accidents. Wipe up spills. Put items where they belong. Reach only at your level. Use a sturdy step stool or ladder to access high places or ask for help.
