Curriculum Expectation(s) and Goal(s) for the Lesson a) Expectations: 2.5 identify their point of view and other possible points of view, evaluate other points of view, and find ways to respond to other points of view, if appropriate b) Goal(s) for the lesson: The students, in groups or individually, have debated the topic of violent video games. They will now write from the opposing view, detailing reasons for or against in an appropriate clear and coherent way. 2. Preassessment and Accommodations/Modifications Preassessment: Academic Needs: Student having difficulties Accommodation/Modification: Students are working in groups based on how they feel about a topic, hopefully they will be engaged, and have scaffolding in their group. Teacher will assist one-onone if there are groups having difficulty. Behavioural Needs: Students who are easily distracted Teacher will use proximity and other low-key control methods to keep distracted students on task. Also the group nature of this lesson should minimize this behaviour. Social Needs: Students who do not often participate Hopefully this lesson engages students on an emotional level. Students always have the right to pass. Physical Needs: C.R. has hearing difficulties Teacher will wear an FM system at all times, and ensure that C.R. is receiving instruction. 3. Learning Environment Classroom Setup: Desks will be setup in groups to allow ample space for the Teacher to mill around There will also be space for the triangle debate groups Group Organization: Students will work in pairs based on their opinion of the topic 4. Teacher Resources: Chalk and Chalkboard Student Resources: 1 or 2 sheets of paper and a writing utensil Websites and Resources: Activities adapted from Engaging All by Creating High School Learning Communities (Gibbs, 2008) 6. Content, Teaching Strategies, for Lesson Time Teaching / Assess. Strategy 5 total Recap of the Debate (2 min) Detailed Description Summary of Debate: Teacher will recap the main arguments of the debate. Teacher will again focus on seeing another’s perspective. Along these lines, Teacher will assign a writing piece. Instruction (3 min) Students will be asked to write a paragraph detailing the opposite point of view then the side they chose. Moderators will be given choice of what side they wish to choose from. Group Organization: Writing (20 min) Students will be given the time to write their paragraphs. Teacher will mill around, and also do agendas during this time. Teacher will ask students to get their agendas out to be stamped. 20 total 5 total Consolidation: Summary (5 min) Teacher will stop the class completely for consolidation. They will again explain the need to see other’s points of view. Along these lines, Teacher will ask the students to do a Start-Stop-Continue, to be handed in. 7. Students had to articulate their thoughts in 2 minute or 1 minute timeslots All students were engaged and ready to give their opinion on this topic What steps will you take to improve? Perhaps further shorten the time to make the responses even more succinct Not sure, the participation was pretty perfect b) Effectiveness as a Teacher: What was effective/ineffective about you as a teacher? Effective: Flexibility Effective: Classroom Management How do you know? Students had already debated the issue of video game violence, so a new topic had to be chosen on the spot Debate was respectful, and the times it got a little loud, the class was addressed What steps will you take to improve?
