1 Reflection Observation 4 HW This reflection is based on a teaching session with L3 Beauty Therapy students. 7 students were present all with mixed abilities and the age range of the group was 18 to 34. The group was made up of seven learners in total this was a full class. Five of the learners are attending English and math functional skills support. One of the learners has problems with long terminology so I did allow for this during the session, by making sure the learner had all hand outs and diagrams with links to previous sessions. I have got to know the group very well now and this makes teaching the group easier as I have a better understanding of the learner’s individual needs. The objectives for this session were to deliver Anatomy and physiology revision questions to underpin the learner’s knowledge and understanding of the human body in preparation for their rather large A&P examination paper of 99 questions. This was a three hour session combining theory questions relating to the anterior and posterior parts of the body, the structure of the skin, the layers of the epidermis, the heart and the lymph nodes. I asked the learners to research and label six diagrams 46 in total. The students also had to research the topic by using ICT note books and mobile phones. The session went well and I incorporated teacher led verbal questioning and assessment methods ready for their summative examination. I thought that this would be the best way to assess the learner’s knowledge and understanding of this subject. I thought the session had a clear structure as I linked previous knowledge and other sessions drawing on diagrams they had produced in other sessions. I gave all the learners a hand-out with the diagrams on and asked them to research the answers, then we would go through the questions collectively to achieve any answers they may have got wrong, this seemed to work well with the group. I tried to make the session welcoming and inclusive to all the learners and allowed for differentiation. Some of the terminology is very hard to pronounce and difficult to spell so with this in mind I decided to talk to the group about some of the apps that are available for mobiles to help with new terminology and spelling, this went very well and all the learners did download the one I recommended. I did previously look at this app and it seemed to be one of the best. HW my observer did comment on how I could have perhaps said the learners to check for reviews on apps. I will take this on board to develop my practice. At the start of the session I placed clear learning objectives on the interactive screen for all to see. This was to ensure that all new what the task was in hand. 2 I split the session into 25 minuet slots to encourage sense of timings and goals, but didn’t put too much emphasis on this as I didn’t want to rush some of the less able in the group. In the session the observer HW noted that I have good subject knowledge and was using a range of teaching and learning techniques using formative assessment by way of asking questions and listening carefully to the answers. I also assessed by getting to know written knowledge and understanding which was a great success. I really enjoyed this lesson and felt that i have come a long way within my teaching practice. Lots of strengths have been noted in this observation and I am very Please with the outcome. From this I can now prepare an action plan to move forward with my teaching practice. Action Plan: Develop communication and present information clearly. Express and share learning outcomes for groups and individuals clearly. Ensure my own key skills to enable effective support to my learners. Carry on with my CPD by keeping up to date with my specialist subject. Make links to my specialist area threw real life experiences. Use peer self-assessment more effectively.
