Draft – ACI WETG AIMS for Nursing projects – March 2014 Catharine Death ACI Renal Network – Workforce, Education and training Group Identified Key area for action of Group - Nursing: The group will target specifically staffing requirements, scope of practices and staff / patient ratios across the fields of renal nursing, this will be broken down into three primary interlinked but separate projects,: 1. Chronic Kidney Disease Pathway Management – Resource Requirement Aim: To review the key strategic goals for the management of Chronic Kidney disease, identify required resources to achieve these goals and create a recommendation for Area renal programs in how these programs need to be staffed to allow the patient population to receive timely intervention in disease management and therefore manage the predominant disease pathways - Maintenance of CKD, Active treatment pathway for ESRD or Supportive Care pathway Process: Review current recommendations for CKD pathway and management processes within pathway Survey Current processes and staff ratio / patient population across the NSW Area Renal Programs Review other documented recommendations for CKD management Create a recommendation based on above information and consult with key stakeholders – In key areas of treatment, ratios of patient to staff, metro / rural comparisons Finalise a recommendation for endorsement 2. Dialysis Staffing – Models of care and scope of practice Aim: To review the changing staff classifications being utilised in dialysis units and consolidate an agreed scope of practice and models of care for dialysis units , within this process the different classifications of staffing will be reviewed , and base requirements for working in dialysis units agreed upon including training and supporting scope of practice / practice policy guideline development. This will be weighed against staff / patient ratio recommendations. Process: Review current scope of practice as per registration legislation Survey Current processes, model of care and staff ratio and skill mix across the NSW Area Renal Programs Review other models of care being utilised across Australia and surrounding countries who incorporate team / multiple tiered staffing models 1 Draft – ACI WETG AIMS for Nursing projects – March 2014 Catharine Death Review and recommend patient / staff ratios based on different tiered nursing models, for example – all RN, RN / EEN, RN / EEN / AIN tied in with scope of practice as applicable to metro and rural / remote services Create a recommendation based on above information and consult with key stakeholders – In key areas of treatment type unit – Acute / Satellite / home training with metro / rural comparisons including administration support recommendations Finalise a recommendation for endorsement 3. Renal Staffing - Recommendations and reviews of overall staffing requirement for renal service management. Including: Identification of all facets and pathways that require staffing within renal services – different patient groups for management – CKD / Treatment / non treatment Review and create patient / staff ratios for identified sub specialty areas with in renal services Map staffing specialisation types and recommend patient / staff ratios against service type, for examples, NP’s, CNC/s, NE’s, CNE’s Create a recommendation for application in guiding staffing requirements for renal services and consult with key stakeholders Finalise a recommendation for endorsement. 2
