ACI Renal Network – Workforce, Education and training Group
Identified Key area for action of Group - Nursing:
The group will target specifically staffing requirements, scope of practices and staff / patient ratios
across the fields of renal nursing, this will be broken down into three primary interlinked but
separate projects,:
1. Chronic Kidney Disease Pathway Management – Resource Requirement
Aim: To review the key strategic goals for the management of Chronic Kidney disease,
identify required resources to achieve these goals and create a recommendation for Area
renal programs in how these programs need to be staffed to allow the patient population to
receive timely intervention in disease management and therefore manage the predominant
disease pathways - Maintenance of CKD, Active treatment pathway for ESRD or Supportive
Care pathway
Process:
 Review current recommendations for CKD pathway and management processes
within pathway
 Survey Current processes and staff ratio / patient population across the NSW Area
Renal Programs
 Review other documented recommendations for CKD management
 Create a recommendation based on above information and consult with key
stakeholders – In key areas of treatment, ratios of patient to staff, metro / rural
comparisons
 Finalise a recommendation for endorsement
2. Dialysis Staffing – Models of care and scope of practice
Aim: To review the changing staff classifications being utilised in dialysis units and
consolidate an agreed scope of practice and models of care for dialysis units , within this
process the different classifications of staffing will be reviewed , and base requirements for
working in dialysis units agreed upon including training and supporting scope of practice /
practice policy guideline development. This will be weighed against staff / patient ratio
recommendations.
Process:



Review current scope of practice as per registration legislation
Survey Current processes, model of care and staff ratio and skill mix across the NSW
Area Renal Programs
Review other models of care being utilised across Australia and surrounding
countries who incorporate team / multiple tiered staffing models

Review and recommend patient / staff ratios based on different tiered nursing
models, for example – all RN, RN / EEN, RN / EEN / AIN tied in with scope of practice
as applicable to metro and rural / remote services
Create a recommendation based on above information and consult with key
stakeholders – In key areas of treatment type unit – Acute / Satellite / home training
with metro / rural comparisons including administration support recommendations
Finalise a recommendation for endorsement
3. Renal Staffing - Recommendations and reviews of overall staffing requirement for renal
service management. Including:
 Identification of all facets and pathways that require staffing within renal
services – different patient groups for management – CKD / Treatment / non
treatment
 Review and create patient / staff ratios for identified sub specialty areas
with in renal services
 Map staffing specialisation types and recommend patient / staff ratios
against service type, for examples, NP’s, CNC/s, NE’s, CNE’s
 Create a recommendation for application in guiding staffing requirements
for renal services and consult with key stakeholders
 Finalise a recommendation for endorsement.
