SOUTH WOOD RECYCLING INFORMATION
Each year our nation generates enough garbage to fill a convoy of trash
trucks reaching halfway to the moon and the convoy keeps growing longer
every year! Recycling is just one important remedy for the garbage problem.
It’s an effective solution because it reduces the amount of waste for disposal.
Individuals like you can be part of the solution by recycling at home and at
work. You can use recycled and recyclable products, organize recycling
programs and encourage your neighbors to recycle. Just as we contribute to
our nation’s increasing garbage problem, we can all contribute to its solution
by recycling.
Recycling means separating, collecting, processing, marketing and ultimately
using a material that would have been thrown away. This morning’s
newspaper can be recycled for another morning’s news or other paper
products. Cans and bottles can be crafted for other uses. Quality products
and packaging are being made from recovered materials. We can all help
create markets for recyclables by buying and using these products.
TIPS FOR REDUCING SOLID WASTE

Applicable to Wisconsin Rapids – Other South Wood County
Areas should check with Advanced Disposal (715) 421-3966 or
their local municipalities in regards to garbage/recycling
questions.
What is the city’s recycling and garbage ordinance?
Chapter 7: Garbage and recycling ordinance is on the
City web site: http://www.wirapids.org. On the left side menu, select
documents, located under City Ordinances.
Where can I get a recycle bin?
Recycling bins can be purchased at local hardware stores. Any tote,
weather resistant container, or clear plastic bag is acceptable to use.
What day is my recycling picked up?
Recycling is picked up on your garbage day, every other week in
Wisconsin Rapids. The city has two garbage routes #11 and #18. A
map is available on the City web site at http://streets.wirrapids.org
advising the route number and garbage day according to the area
where you live. Once the route has been determined, you can print a
calendar that will highlight the day of your recycling pick-up. If you do
not have internet access the recycling number is 421-8264.
Will the City pick up furniture?
The City will pick up furniture, mattresses, and other household items.
Consider contacting one of the community resources located under
Choose to Reuse if items are in good condition.
What items are not picked up by the City Garbage/Recycling
Crew?
Appliances, electronic waste, hazardous materials, liquid paint,
lumber, yard waste, and any remodeling/construction material will not
be picked up curb side. Refer to City ordinance for a complete list.
How do I dispose of paint?
Liquid paint cannot be discarded in the garbage. Refer to the
Wood County Clean Sweep for disposal. If paint is in solid form, it is
o.k. to place it in the garbage. Kitty litter or letting water based paint
air dry are acceptable methods for solidifying paint.
13
ITEMS TO RECYCLE
PAPER
Includes mixed paper, newspaper and cardboard. Wrapping paper
other than foil or plastic laminated papers is acceptable.
PLASTICS
Number 1 through 7 plastics.
GLASS
Glass bottles/jars all colors; should be clean with labels removed.
No mirrors, window glass, light bulbs, dishes.
TIN AND ALUMINUM
Includes all cans; cleaned with the labels removed. Flatten them if
possible. No aerosol or paint cans.
COMPOST
All yard waste such as leaves, grass, garden waste and branches.
ELECTRONIC WASTE
Electronic waste, e-waste, e-scrap: discarded electrical or
electronic equipment and devices. Electronic waste is extremely
harmful to the environment and poses a serious risk to the health and
welfare of people, animals and an entire eco-system. Rapidly
changing technology and innovative development of new products
has greatly contributed to large amounts of e-waste being disposed of
in our local landfills. Lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury, and
brominated flame retardants are just a few of the contaminants
created by e-waste disposal. On October 23, 2009, Wisconsin passed
a bill that prohibits all forms of electronic waste from being incinerated
or entering community landfills. The legislation requires all e-waste to
be dropped of at a registered recycling center, certified by the state to
insure procedures and handling of all electronics is being properly
adhered to. Refer to E-Waste recycling centers (page 6).

The best practice is to keep items from going to the landfill in the first
place. If items are clean and gently used consider donating them to
the following community resources. Not only are you helping the
environment, but contributing clothing, furniture, and other household
items to those in the community that have a need is a good thing.
