Product Descriptions

Bridge Model

Research and write about the history of a famous bridge, then make a model of the bridge. The model must be small enough to fit in a shoebox and should not hinder the box lid from closing.

Your written report should include but not limited to:

 Name of the designer

 Date of completion

 Length of time it took to build

 Type of bridge

 Any problems that arose and needed to be overcome while building the bridge

 Any natural or human created disasters the bridge has withstood.

 Famous events that have occurred on or near the bridge.

 Materials used to build the bridge and their origin.

 Anything you think is interesting to share about the bridge.

You must provide a list explaining where you collected any of your information.

Futuristic Need Bridge

 Create a situation that needs a bridge to fix it. (For example a new town is being built across a river from a major city. The river contains boat traffic, and the bridge needs to allow ships to travel under it. Also, the bridge will support trucks, cars, and a train for travel.)

 Draw a design of a bridge to fulfill the requirements of the bridge.

(Think of the climate, use, and purpose.) Make sure your design matches these “needs”.

 Build a model- The model should be small enough to fit into a shoebox. It may stick out of the box. Your model should be able to hold weight without any support.

In addition to the model, turn in:

 A written and illustrated description of the area where the bridge is being built and what requirements the bridge will fulfill.

 An illustrated plan of the bridge. (Please use a ruler or straight edge for lines.)

 You must provide a list explaining where you collected your information.

Top Ten List

Create a list of criteria that make a “great” bridge. Criteria could include aesthetics, span, design, durability, age. Research and find bridges that fulfill most or all of your criteria for a “great” bridge. For each winning bridge you must:

 Include the name and year built

 A picture

 List specific information that matched your criteria for it to be in the Top Ten list.

Present your Top Ten list in a creative way. You may use any media for your presentation. (Scrapbook, Power Point, iMovie, ect…)

You must provide a list explaining where you collected your information.

Superlatives List

Research bridges in the United States and/or the world. Create a

“Superlatives List” with at least 10 winners. (Longest, Oldest, Tallest)

 For each winner, include the following information: o Name of the bridge o Location o Picture o Supporting information that allowed it to win. (i.e. If a bridge wins for the longest arch bridge, you should include the length of the bridge.)

 Present your Superlative list in a creative way. You may use any media for your presentation. (Scrapbook, Power Point, iMovie, ect…)

 You must provide a list explaining where you collected your information.

Photo Journal

Research and visit bridges in our local community (Dayton, Howard

County, or Maryland) and discover how bridges have played a role in the community’s development.

 You can present your information in any media that you would like.

(Scrapbook, Power Point, iMovie, ect…)

 Your information should be organized chronologically.

 Each bridge that you include should have had an impact on the community (positive or negative).

 Each image of a bridge should be accompanied by a written explanation that includes but is not limited to: o Name of the builder o Date of completion o Reason for the bridge o Materials used to build bridge o Impact on the community and events that happened because of the bridge

You must provide a list explaining where you collected your information.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Your final project should reflect a deep understanding of your research. Projects should be informative, neat, colorful, and creative. Most of all, you should be proud of what you turn in!

Projects are due on May 8, 2013 and will be on display at the

Enrichment Fair on May 15, 2013.
