Endangered Species Project
APES: Due Wednesday December 11th, 2013 at the beginning of class
Purpose: To identify threatened or endangered species in the United States and throughout the
world.
Product: PowerPoint presentation with one slide per endangered species. The “slide” should have a
summary of the key points. In the “notes”, you should have a written description for each section
with an asterisk “*”.
Instructions:
1. Identify 10 threatened or endangered species
a. 5 must be from the United States, 5 from outside.
b. 1 from the US and 1 from outside need to be plants.
c. Choose at least 1 marine species
2. For each species, you will need:
a. A picture of the species (include a reference)
b. Scientific name (Genus species)
c. Common name
d. *Range: Geographical location of the species. For marine species, the range may be
the entire ocean.
e. *Habitat: This is the biome(s) they live in. Provide a description of the habitat—the
name is not enough! Some things to think about: Temperature, precipitation,
seasons, vegetation, etc.
f. *Why is the species threatened or endangered? Describe the reason the species is
either threatened or endangered. If it is due to man, include the reasons.
g. *What is being done? Describe, if anything, is being done to preserve the species. If
nothing is being done, you need to state that and explain why.
h. Reference ALL resources for each species. I will check for plagiarism: you may
reword but NOT COPY AND PASTE. Make sure your resources are quality resources.
Websites:
These are some helpful websites to get you started. You should seek out other resources.

 Endangered Species: http://eelink.net/EndSpp/
 The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: http://www.iucnredlist.org/
Grading:
This project is worth 45 points:
 4 points each for the content of each endangered species (total of 40 points)
 4 points for neatness/aesthetics (fonts match, easy to read)
 1 point for proper file name (LastnameFirstinitial_EndangeredSpecies) and title slide
 *Automatic 10% deduction from grade for everyday that it is late
Collaboration:
If you choose to, you may work on this project with one partner. If you choose to work as a pair, you
must complete a slide for 15 endangered species, 5 in the US, 10 outside with one plant species
from each and a marine species from each.
Extra credit:
The extra credit must be completed individually (no partners) and must be turned in as a typed,
hard copy. Pick either option one OR two.
1. Option 1 (5 points): Find two current event articles (with in the last two years) that deal
with endangered or threatened species. Write a summary of each and then discuss the
following: Who is the article written by? What purpose does the article achieve
(informational, opinion, review etc.)? Is the article biased? Why or why not? And if so, how
does it influence the content and your understanding of the issues? What additions or edits
would you suggest and why? Cite all resources using APA. Here is a great resource for APA
citations: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
2. Option 2 (5 points): Research local groups, activities, or legislation that deal with some
aspect of environmental science we have studied so far. Write an informative essay that
describes the goals of the group/activity/legislation and their plan on achieving the goal.
What suggestions would you have or what critique do you have of their goals? Make sure
your suggestions are backed by information/research. You may NOT use the OPUSD district
initiatives as an example. One example if you live in LA: There is a group in LA called the
“Los Angeles Food Policy Council” whose goal is to build a system where food is “healthy,
affordable, fair, and sustainable”. Cite all resources using APA. Here is a great resource for
