Department of Fine and Performing Arts Second Stage Application Guidelines 2014-2015 Season Second Stage Application Timeline Proposals Due……………………………..…….….February 13th Interviews……………………….week of February 24th-28th Second Stage Season Announced….March 10th (latest) We encourage proposals from dramaturges, designers, performers, playwrights, and other theatre artists in addition to directors. For 2014/2015 students may apply for four types of projects: the 24 Hour Project/Staged Readings of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, “8” the play, and Spring’s Awakening, a 3-day Experiment, a 2-week Lab, or a 12-week Production. In the 2014/2015 academic year, there will be up to two full 12-week productions, up to two 2-week second stage labs, the performance that will result from the collaboration course, and as many 3-day experiments as we can fit into the schedule based on applications. Students applying for an opportunity should do the following: For Labs and Full Productions: The following must be completed and returned electronically to April Browning at abrowni@luc.edu, by 5pm, Thursday, February 13th: o A completed copy of the [2014-2015 Second Stage Application]. o A signed copy of the [2014-2015 Second Stage Director Agreement]. o A current resume and copies of any scripts being proposed should be included with the application. Scripts can be submitted in hard copy. Schedule an interview with the Second Stage Committee when application is submitted. Interviews will be conducted from February 24th-28th and projects will be selected by March 10th (at the latest). Readings: As part of our mainstage season, we are incorporating a reading series that will enhance and support the pieces that will be produced. Due to this new opportunity, we want to offer students the chance to direct one or more of these reading, all of which will occur in the spring semester. If interested in applying, please include one page statement of intent on why you are interested in directing a reading and a current resume. Interviews are not necessary for this opportunity. Reading Descriptions: -The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (associated with our mainstage production of fml): The play centers on a deaf man and the people he encounters in a 1930s mill town in the state of Georgia, US. This reading will be performed on the set of fml in the Newhart. -Spring’s Awakening (associated with our mainstage musical Spring Awakening): Set in late-19th century Germany, the play tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality, including struggles with abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse, and suicide. This reading will be performed on the Spring Awakening set in the Newhart. -“8” the Play: The play portrays the closing arguments of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a federal trial that led to the overturn of Proposition 8 and is written in the style of verbatim theatre reenactment, using transcripts from the trial, journalist records, and media interviews from the plaintiffs, defendants and proponents involved. This reading will be performed in the Newhart. - If interested in these opportunities, email April Browning at abrowni@luc.edu for a copy of the scripts. 24 Hour Project: The 24 Hour Project needs a coordinator to oversee and run this annual event which will be presented within the first couple of weeks of the Fall semester. Requirements include communicating with DFPA faculty and staff on scheduling the details of the event, arranging teams of writers and directors for up to 6 original plays, organizing student participants, and running the technical rehearsal process. Collaboration Course: In the fall semester, we are offering a new course that will result in the devising of an original work to be produced in the Underground in Spring 2015 as part of our Second Stage Season. This course is not open enrollment.
