ASSESSMENT

Objectives
Note:
1.
Students will submit their own work in their own words. All assignments will be submitted via
Turnitin to be checked for copying of content.
2.
Answers will be well organised and well presented. Marks will be deducted for poorly organised
or poorly explained solutions. Refer to the relevant section in the course material for appropriate
presentation, setting out and formatting of answers.
3.
Answers will be relevant. Students should refer to the marking criteria information to ensure their
answers are relevant and correctly address the question.
4.
Relevant diagrams and pictures will be used, where possible, to help explain your answers.
5.
All work will be referenced correctly. Material that is not correctly referenced using the Harvard
style guide will not be awarded any marks.
Question 1
(10 marks)
Describe a procedure for charging a hole with bulk pumped emulsion explosive. What are the
hazards, risks and controls associated with this procedure?
Question 2
(5 marks)
Calculate the average drilling rate, penetration rate and drilling efficiency of a crawler mounted
pneumatic rig drilling a 12 m deep by 85 mm diameter hole. The penetration rate of drilling
machine in medium hard granite is 24 m/h.
 Delays due to two rod changes = 1.2 min,
 cleaning the hole = 0.8 min,
 pulling the drill rods = 1.4 min,
 moving the drill = 1.4 min.
Question 3
(5 marks)
Calculate the production per year for a dragline with the following parameters:







Material = weathered sandstone,
Density = 2.4 t/Bm3,
Swell factor = 1.3,
Machine size = 55 m3,
swing angle = 85˚,
base cycle time = 1.3 min,
bucket fill factor = 0.85.
Assume the dragline is worked 21 hours per day, seven days per week for 49 weeks per year.
Provision for disruptions = 18 days per year.
Question 4
(10 marks)
A mine site has the following parameters:
 Haul road = maintained dirt,
 Rolling resistance = 4%,
 Material = clay overburden,
 Density = 2.5 t/Bm3,
 Swell factor = 1.4,
 Haul route = 2.2 km at 4% grade,
 Production required = 5500 Bm3 per 8 h shift,
 Machine capacity = 24 m3 single engine and open bowl type scraper,
 Rated load = 32 t,
 Loaded haul speed = 18 km/h,
 Empty haul speed = 55 km/h,
 Loading time = Dumping time = 0.8 min.
Assume dozer(s) push load and then back track to push the next scraper.
Calculate
a) the scraper production per hour,
b) the number of scrapers and dozers required.
Question 5
(10 marks)
Given the following data calculate the truck production per hour.
 Haul road = Maintained dirt (3% RR),
 Material = Blasted sandstone,
 Swell factor = 1.3,
 Density = 2.4 t/Bm3,
 Truck type = Rigid body rear dump,
 Truck capacity = 95 m3,
 Truck rated load = 160 t,
 Truck empty load = 95 t,







Shovel capacity = 28 m3,
Shovel bucket fill factor = 0.9,
Shovel cycle time = 0.7 min,
Truck haul time = 15 min,
Truck loading time = 3.0 min,
Truck dumping time = 1.5 min,
Truck spot time = 0.5 min.
Question 6
(10 marks)
Explain the design characteristics and operating characteristics of a rope shovel.
Question 7
(10 marks)
A dozer operates for 6,000 hrs per year, and has an expected life of 30,000 hrs. There is an initial
capital cost of $1.9 million. What is the hourly ownership cost assuming the company seeks a
25% return on investment?
Question 8
(a)
(b)
(10 marks)
Using the equivalent lease cost method, what is the average hourly ownership cost of a
dozer which operates for 5,000 hrs per year, and which has an expected life of 25,000 hrs.
It has an initial capital cost of $1.8 million. Assume the company seeks a 20% return on
investment and the capital recovery factor is 0.4.
(7 marks)
What is the fuel consumption of a truck with a 1600 kW engine hauling under average
conditions? Load factor is 0.5. (3 marks)
Question 9
(10 marks)
A dozer with an initial capital cost of $1.8 million is working under good job conditions, and is to
be used over a 28,000 hour life. Repair factor = 0.25 and Job Factor = 0.88. The standard or
reference life of this machine, to which the repair factor applies, is 18,000 hours.
What is the Repair cost for the standard life of the dozer?
What is the repair cost for the planned life of the dozer?
Question 10
(10 marks)
Which of the following pump types would you choose to pump out a 40 m deep by 100 m long
by 50 m wide pit that has been flooded by an unprecedented heavy rainfall event? Justify the
suitability of the pump by clearly describing the procedures and hazards associated with dewatering the pit.
(a) Centrifugal pump
(b) Turbine pump
(c) Reciprocating pump
(d) Submersible pump
(e) Roto pump
Question 11
(10 marks)
Access the Queensland Government Department of Mines and Energy website,
http://www.dme.qld.gov.au . Enter “sustainable” in the search window in the top right hand
corner of the page. Review the first ten search results. Sort the titles of the articles under the
following headings:
 Environmental Sustainability
 Economic Sustainability
 Social and Cultural Sustainability
Include a brief justification (maximum 50 words) as to why you have listed each title under its
particular heading.
