Radiation shielding glass
SCHOTT RD 50®
1. Object of tender
SCHOTT RD 50® is a radiation shielding glass and protects against X-rays and gamma rays
in the medical and technical field. In research works it also provides necessary safety
screening. RD 50® is suited for use as viewing and consultation windows, door and
panorama glazing, and radiation protection for medical personnel. It can be used in x-ray
rooms, operating rooms, radiation stations, medical pratices, material testing and research
laboratories, etc.
The protective effect of this extra dense glass is based on its high content of heavy metallic
oxides of nearly 70 per cent by weight. Whilst the lead oxide content alone is more than 51
%, it is cadmium free.

2. Relevant norms / Quality
Due to the high content of heavy metallic oxides a density of above 5.05 g/cm3 is reaches, so
that relatively small thicknesses fulfill all legal safety regulations. Radiation shielding glass
RD 50® meets the requirements DIN EN 61331-2. The protective capacity of a radiation
shielding glass for X-rays is indicated by the attenuation equivalent, either in relation of lead
thickness to glass thickness in per cent or in mm Pb.
