Parent and Family Partnerships
We understand that value of your time, but we also understand how important it is for
adolescents to have parental involvement in their academic careers during these formative years.
Therefore, all parents are strongly encouraged to engage with the school in a variety of manners.
It is expected that parents attend 3 Scholar Led Conferences during the school year, in addition to
Orientation or Back to School Night. Parents can also participate in monthly Parent Meetings and
School Accountability Committee (SAC) Meetings, as well as visiting any day that school is in
session.
Monthly Parent Meetings
The Venture Prep Parent Meetings are organized to support the school through fostering a
sense of community. Meetings are scheduled for the second Monday of each month at 5:30
pm. If a holiday falls on the first Monday, the meeting will be held on the third Monday of the
month. Please see our School Calendar or contact the Main Office for more information.
Minimum Family Contribution per school year: 5 hours
SLC Conferences
Scholar-Led Conferences are a required part of the academic program at Venture Prep. Attending
this conference with your scholar is important because it gives your scholar practice presenting to
an audience and gives you an opportunity to know exactly where your scholar is succeeding
and/or should focus their efforts. This is also an important time to meet teachers, form a
communication model, and understand the content and skills that your scholar will be learning.
We appreciate your partnership in your scholar’s college bound experience. All content teachers in
the grade level specified will be attending Scholar-Led Conferences.
For 9-12th grade scholars, Scholar-Led Conferences will take place on the following dates this
school year:




Although not ideal, if a scholar does miss their Scholar-Led Conference on the designated night,
there are arrangements the family can make with the scholar’s Crew Leader. The scholar can
present to their crew, an administrator, or a parent at a scheduled time organized with the Crew
Leader. It is important to know that if a Scholar-Led Conference is rescheduled, it will only be
with the Crew Leader.
We look forward to discussing your scholar’s progress and attendance.
Conflict Resolution
We believe that conflicts can be resolved through clear, transparent communication. Parents
must first bring a concern to the adult involved, then to the Principal, and finally to the Chairman
of the Board if no earlier resolution can be affected. Likewise, a teacher should deal with a scholar,
parent, or colleague before consulting the Principal and finally the Board of Directors.
5
Contacting School
Families may contact the school during regular school hours. By dialing the main number to the
school (303.893.0805) callers will be directed to the person whom they wish to reach. However,
a teacher’s first responsibility is to educate our scholars and to not lose instructional minutes;
therefore, it may be easiest to reach the staff member via email. Staff email addresses are: first
initial and last name @ventureprep.org. With regards to grades and progress reports, the
families’ first line of communication should be with their scholar’s Crew teacher. The Venture
Prep Administrative Team is always available to you at the following addresses:

Phone Messages for Scholars
In order to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum, when a parent/guardian calls with a
message for a scholar, the message will be given to the scholar during lunch or at the end of the
school day, whichever is sooner. If the message is of an urgent nature, the scholar will be called to
the office.
Visiting the School
All visitors must report to the office. Parents are always welcome to visit the school and are
encouraged to do so. However, we require that all visitors, including parents, report to the
office to obtain a visitor’s pass.
Volunteer Opportunities – Parents Welcome
Family and Community Volunteers enrich the life of VP and provide invaluable support for scholar
success. At VP we value adults as responsible models for scholars, and so we value the modeling of
community service. We recognize that scholars need to increase their familiarity with their
community and with the range of roles that adults play professionally and as citizens. Any time that
is spent by adults in supporting VP is greatly appreciated.
Feedback and Complaint Procedure
Venture Prep welcomes feedback from scholars and families. Much of the feedback will be
between the teachers and the students and families on a regular basis, including calls home and
in-person meetings as needed. Additionally, the school front office manages and coordinates
appointments with school leadership, including the Principal and Vice Principal. Occasionally,
however, more formal complaints or feedback may be desired. The following explains the
complaint procedure:
6
1. Scholars, parents, and other persons directly affected by the operation and
administration of Venture Prep are entitled to the use of this process.
2. Complaints relating to the administration and operation of the School must be submitted
in writing within a reasonable time to the Principal for resolution.
3. The Principal shall consider all the facts and arrive at a resolution of the complaint.
4. If the complainant is dissatisfied with the principal’s decision, then the complainant may
escalate the matter in writing to the Board of Directors. The Board Chair will evaluate the facts
and circumstances of which the complaint is based and make a determination about how best to
resolve the matter. The Chair’s decision is final.
Newsletter
School newsletters are sent home twice per month with the scholars. Parents can also elect to
receive the newsletter via email, or can access the newsletters via our school website
(www.ventureprep.org). The newsletters have critical information about upcoming school
events, and parents are expected to read the newsletter carefully each week.
7
Venture Prep Academics & A.S.S.E.T.S.
Overview of A.S.S.E.T.S.
Throughout the year, all scholars and staff carefully examine the Venture Assets, which are:
Analytical Readers
Scholarly Communicators
Sharp Mathematicians
Effective Collaborators
Tenacious Problem Solvers
Self Starters
These qualities form the basis for relationships among the members of the VP community and
with the community around us. Scholars and staff will be expected to demonstrate these values
both inside and outside of school. In the first days of school each year, scholars actively
participate in the clarification of these qualities and define the means by which these qualities
are demonstrated and recognized.
Academic Program in Depth
Focus on College Preparation
Throughout the high school program, staff members will help scholars to develop their understanding
of and interest in post-secondary educational options. Scholars will be introduced to professionals in a
variety of fields related to course studies, and they will become familiar with the educational routes to
college and career interests. From the inception of their high school careers, scholars will have practice
with the test formats that the college application process entails, so that they can begin to orient
themselves to such hurdles as the ACT; and they will work one-on-one with a college counselor
beginning in his/her freshman year. Beginning in junior year, scholars will be assisted with the college
application and financial aid process. As seniors, all scholars will be accepted into a college or
university.
Rigorous Academics
VP has a rigorous curriculum and promotes a high level of scholar motivation and engagement through
real-world learning focused on issues of concern to young people. Literacy skills of reading, written
expression and oral communication are continuously taught by all teachers, with reinforcement and
application of skills coordinated among content and English teachers. All scholars will meet college
entrance requirements by graduation and will be proficient in the core subject areas of English, math,
science, and social studies, as well as world language and the arts. In addition to mastering course
requirements, VP deliberately helps scholars to acquire self- knowledge and to articulate their selfreflections and growth plans with poise. These skills are highly desired by college entrance
committees.
Effective Collaboration
Collaborative group work experiences are an integral component of the Venture Prep academic
experience. Group work exists to reinforce learning in the content area; serve as laboratories for
learning how to become more effective as team members; help scholars improve interpersonal
communication skills; enhance the transfer of knowledge and information among scholars through
collaboration during the preparation of course assignments; facilitate collaboration that results in the
development of higher-order thinking skills; serve as support groups to help scholars successfully
negotiate the educational process; provide experience in group activities that mirror the workplace of
the 21st century.
8
Academic Support and Enrichment
To ensure the success of every scholar, Venture Prep has committed to the following:
Individualized Use of Academic Support & Enrichment Periods – Response to Intervention (RTI):
Academic intervention and enrichment will be a regularly scheduled part of each scholar's weekly
program four days a week. This support provides access to Blended Learning opportunities, both
through enrichment and support contact, depending upon a scholar’s individual needs. The purpose
of this class is to provide support to scholars for various purposes including: homework, one on one
clarification of learning targets, personal check in, and extracurricular activities. A scholar’s crew
leader will work with him or her to help prioritize and organize how to maximize the benefits of
academic support.
Special Education: Scholars who are classified with a disability affecting their educational progress will
be provided services as indicated on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Accommodation Plan.
The laws and regulations governing the provision of educational services will be followed with
precision. As required by law, school representatives and parents will assist in the development of the
IEP and Accommodation Plans, and all will work actively to design programs emphasizing scholar
participation in the least restrictive environment. Certified special education providers will oversee IEP
implementation, while general education teachers work as active team members in the service of
each scholar's needs in classrooms to achieve academic success.
High School Electives: Venture Prep offers Electives during the week that count towards graduation
credit. Scholars will have the opportunity to pick an Elective for each semester of the school year
based on their interests. Electives will be graded and scholars will receive credit hours upon successful
completion of the Elective course(s).
Crew: Crew is an opportunity for scholars to begin each day with a positive, team-oriented interaction
with other scholars and teachers. Crew will consist of: Greetings, Sharing, Activities, Daily News,
Advisory, and Community Meetings. Scholars will receive a grade and credit hours for successful
completion of Crew each semester.
Project-Based Learning : Curriculum is organized around contextualized in-depth studies. These
studies, or “expeditions,” integrate the teaching of content, concepts, and skills, and include a focus
on project-based learning (PBL). They are the major vehicles for delivering curriculum, along with
protocols, workshop models, and products.
Graduation Requirements
Venture Prep is a college-preparatory school, therefore, our curriculum aligns with the Common
Core Standards and the Colorado University System Minimum Academic Preparation Standards
(Appendix I). Scholars are required to attend high school for four years (8 Semesters) and
satisfactorily pass the prescribed curriculum to achieve graduation.
In order to receive a Venture Prep High School diploma, scholars must earn a minimum of 240
credits in required and elective coursework during their four years of high school and must have a
cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, although we strongly encourage all scholars to strive
to maintain at least a 3.25 GPA for college admissions. During the first semester of senior year, all
scholars must complete the application process with at least four colleges or universities.
9
Minimum Graduation Requirements:

* Community-Based Experience – Within the 240 semester hours (24 units) required for a
diploma, scholars will complete community-based service learning with Crew and within various
classes. These experiences may include, but are not limited to, field or service experiences, work
experiences, and internships.
Credit Accumulation
A scholar’s transcript is the official report of academic work that will be sent to colleges and
potential employers upon request. In Denver Public Schools, the following breakdown of credit
hours typically determines one’s grade level status:
0-55 Credits = 9th Grade
55-115 Credits = 10th Grade
115-175 Credits = 11th Grade
175-239 Credits = 12th Grade
240+ Credits = Graduation
All transcript requests are directed to the Office Manager in order to obtain official transcripts.
10
AdvancedCoursework
Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and College Classes
In instances where honors and AP classes are offered, grade point values for the letter grades “A”
through “C-” are calculated on a 5.0 to 3.0 scale in recognition of the additional work required (i.e.
A+/A = 5.0, A- = 4.7, B+ = 4.3, etc.). Grades lower than a “C-” in honors or AP classes will not receive
an extra grade point and may result in the scholar’s placement in a non-honors class. College
classes will be weighted according to the weight given to the equivalent VP class. Failure to meet
requirements will result in that scholar not receiving honors credit.
Retention Policy
Venture Prep reserves the right to retain scholars who do not demonstrate adequate academic
performance throughout the school year. Venture Prep will strive to make this the last viable
option for any scholar, as the mission of the school aims for continued growth and success. In
addition, every step and every intervention will be taken before a decision on retention is
finalized. However, there may be circumstances that require retention. Therefore, the school will
adhere to the policy below:







Minimum 2.0 GPA required for passing to the next grade.
Scholar must demonstrate mastery in all core content classes: Math, Language Arts,
Science, and Social Studies.
A scholar who fails 3 or more Core Content classes will be retained, pending Summer School
and credit hours.
Credits: Scholars are expected to earn 60 Credit Hours per year at Venture Prep. Scholars
who fail to earn 60 Credit Hours will be required to make up missed credits in order to be
promoted to the next grade. These missed credits will be made-up in Summer School or in
the following year at V.P.
o Failure to meet any of the above mentioned criteria may result in
mandatory DPS Summer School for promotion to the next grade, which is
the responsibility of the family to sign-up and follow through. The
Principal reserves the right to promote/retain a scholar based on the
criteria. The Principal will rely on the input of the School Leadership Team
in addition to the criteria.
Chronic attendance problems will impact a scholar’s ability to be promoted to the next
grade. Chronic absenteeism can significantly impact grades and/or credits received in all
classes.
Parents will be notified of academic concerns, with the possibility for retention, at
quarterly SLC conferences. These meetings are referred to as “Meetings of Concern” and
will include a contract between the school, the scholar, and the parent.
All decisions on failed credit hours and/or retention will be finalized at the end of each
Semester.
In spite of our best efforts to implement the programs mentioned throughout the Family
Handbook, there will be scholars who will not be prepared for promotion to the next grade. In
these particular cases, the school’s Administration will meet with the parents to discuss the best
options for the following school year. These decisions are based primarily on academic grades, in
addition with the Venture Prep Values and the Venture Prep Mission Statement.
11
Homework Policy
The purpose of homework at Venture Prep is to provide additional practice of content skills and
concepts in order to extend learning outside of the school day. By allowing scholars time to work
independently through their own application of skills, scholars are able to retain what they learn
over time.
Homework Expectations
The quantity and frequency of homework assigned is up to the classroom teacher.
Homework is assigned by classroom teachers as needed. It is up to the scholar to leave school
with a clear understanding of what the homework entails and when it is due. All homework
assignments need to be turned in within 1 week of the due date.
There are times that scholars may need to use their classroom notes, or have a handout from
class to support independent practice. In this case, scholars will be responsible for bringing
all materials used for homework back to class the following day unless otherwise specified.
Scholars may have homework in multiple classes and several days a week.
When a scholar does not have a specific piece of homework assigned, scholars do still have
homework. It is called studying. Scholars are highly encouraged to review class notes, quiz
themselves on tested materials, and engage in outside of class reading similar to what they will
experience in a college setting.
Standards-Based Grading and Homework Expectations
Homework will be graded based on the learning targets assigned with the homework task similar
to grading a quiz with multiple learning targets. This means that homework assigned will act as an
independent formative assessment in the gradebook. All learning targets that are graded as
homework also need to be assessed more than once in the classroom.
Partnership of Support: Venture Prep AND Parental Homework Roles and Responsibilities
After school, Venture Prep Staff and/or Parents will provide a suitable environment for scholars to
complete their homework Monday through Thursday. Venture Prep will provide supervision and a
quiet environment for scholars to complete their homework.
Venture Prep Staff and/or Parents will remind scholars that homework is their responsibility in
order to become the scholar that they are striving to be.
Venture Prep Staff and/or Parents encourage scholars to communicate and ask their teacher(s)
clarifying questions concerning their homework.
Venture Prep Staff and/or Parents will monitor activities so that sufficient time is provided for
homework.
Venture Prep Staff and/or Parents prohibit cheating, plagiarism, and any other dishonest
practices in the completion of homework.
12
Grading & Reporting Policy
Grading Beliefs
Grades must accurately communicate academic achievement.
The meaning of an individual assignment grade, learning target grade as well as overall grade
must be clear to scholars.
Communication of grades should be frequent and accessible to all Venture Prep scholars and
families.
The grading system must be equally rigorous when compared to our neighbors. Venture Prep
should not feel harder or easier to excel in than schools around us.
The grading system must be fair and consistent. This means that all staff must follow the Venture
Prep “Grading Philosophy and System Policy”.
Characteristics of the Grading System
Clearly Prioritized: All grades are organized by learning targets, scholar-friendly language in
support of state standards. We share relevant learning targets in a class syllabus, during each
class day to frame the lesson, on assessments, progress reports, and final report cards.
Understandable to Scholars: Scholars should be able to effectively explain what their grades are
as well as how and why they earned the grade.
Consistent: All teachers use the Venture Prep “Grading Philosophy and System Policy.”
Fair: We assess each learning target on how much proficiency toward the learning targets is
demonstrated. We then base grades entirely on the degree to which scholars show progress
toward each learning target as they progress through the course.
Accurate: Most recent evidence completely replaces out-of-date evidence when it is reasonable to
do so. Grades represent scholar’s achievement by the end of the grading period. For example, if a
scholar's reading fluency started at a 1, then reached a 3 by the end of the term, the report card
would show a 3 (as opposed to the average which would be a 2). This is the more progressive
approach to standards-based grading, advocated by Dr. Robert Marzano.
Transparent: Scholar grades are “open” to the intended users of information.
Accessible: Our grading system supports frequent reporting: Grade progress reports will be
printed and sent home on every full week of school. Parents are welcome to access our online
grading tracking system called Jupiter.
Rigorous: At the end of each semester for High School, our system requires that scholars pass by
earning a letter grade of C- (2.0) or higher in their academic performance in order to earn credit
for any course in the school. Venture Prep does not issue D’s.
Aligned to rubrics and district requirements: We track progress using a 1-4 scale (1=F, 2= C,3=B, 4=
A) and in the end report from Infinite Campus to scholars, families, and Denver Public Schools with
letter grades.
Organization of the Grade Book
Teachers enter grades per assessment according to learning targets. Learning Targets may assess
more than 1 learning target. In this case, the scholar will earn 2 or more grades for that
assignment.
13
Factors of the Grade
All grades are based on evidence of scholar achievement only. Venture Prep A.S.S.E.T.S. are not
factored into the final grade. Scholar behaviors can impede or promote scholar academic
achievement. Cheating is recorded as an “incomplete” rather than a zero and scholars are
expected to make up the work with integrity.
In the event of late and/or missing work, scholar will have an equitable opportunity to make-up
the missed assignment(s) if the absence is excused.
Access to Grades for Venture Prep Scholars and Family
1. Printed Format
 This is a traditional printed report and will be sent home each Wednesday.
 Please note the annual progress report calendar with dates and details about the
progress reports that are sent home.
2. Website Portal
 This allows for 24 hours per day 7 days per week access to ALL of your scholar's
achievement data. Every family will be able to login at www.jupitergrades.com in
order to set this up for their scholar. Families with more than one scholar enrolled
at Venture Prep need only one login to see all of their scholar's grades.
3. Email Updates
 This method may be customized to your preference. For example, a report can be
emailed as frequently as every time a grade changes or as infrequently as once per
week.
4. Text Messages
 Families who wish to have updates sent to their phone via text message can do so.
However, the report is brief and will simply be the overall grade per class.
Parents/Guardians: Please note you can receive frequent communication regarding your
scholar’s grades by providing your email and/or cell phone # to the main office.
Please expect to review and receive additional information at Venture Prep Scholar-Led
Conferences.
Field Work
From time to time the scholars at Venture Prep are given the opportunity to go on school-related
field trips. A scholar must obtain a Field Trip Permission Slip from his or her teacher with the
proper parental signature before he or she will be allowed to leave school grounds. A scholar,
while on a field trip, will be governed by the rules of conduct presented in this Scholar Handbook.
Scholars with backpacks, lunch boxes, or sacks, will be subject to inspection by sponsors, teachers,
chaperones, or administration before leaving and/or returning from field trips. Failure to follow
school rules and field trip policies while on field trips may result in loss of privilege to attend such
programs as well as other consequences.

Behavior Policy-Positive Behavior Support
Venture Prep believes in focusing on the positive and recognizing good behavior and good
decision- making. We hope to encourage and reward strong choices of character. In such a
school atmosphere, we believe that positive relationships and effective learning will thrive.
However, there are times when adolescent scholars will make poor choices and act in a
manner that is not aligned with the Venture Prep Guiding Principles. In addressing the poor
choices made by scholars, we aim to teach our scholars through accountability and
continuous reflection.
Guiding Principles
 We tell the truth.
 We treat each other with respect, even if we are not treated with
respect.
 We repair our relationships if they are damaged.
 We ask for help.
 We will make mistakes. Every mistake is a teaching moment that is most effective
when we act honestly and respectfully.
 We live with the consequences of our actions, good or bad.
 We view conflict as an opportunity for problem-solving and real-world
preparation as opposed to a personal attack.
 We trust one another.
 We hold each other accountable for meeting our high standards.
Zero Tolerance: There are rules at Venture Prep that if broken will result in an immediate
referral to the Principal and a minimum penalty of In-School Suspension. These infractions
are considered “zero tolerance”, and include but are not limited to the following:
 Bullying
 Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, Weapons, Fireworks
 Assault and/or harassment: Verbal, Physical, or Sexual (including slurs)
 Theft
 Skipping class/school
 Destruction of Property
 Fighting
15
Our scholars’ behavior and attitudes should reflect those of positive leaders. The
administration, faculty and staff will work in concert with the families as we strive toward
teaching our scholars appropriate behavior. Our conduct will be a major factor in making
Venture Prep a college-bound environment.
Please note that the school has a legal obligation to ensure that the school environment is
free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. Venture Prep will honor the Code of
Discipline set forth by Denver Public Schools. More information can be found at:

Criteria for School Event Participation
As a community, we want to recognize and celebrate the hard work that takes place in the
classroom each day with non-academic school events such as VP’s Got Talent, Crew Olympics,
Dress Down Days, and School Dances. In order keep these events positive, scholars are
required to meet established criteria to participate. Participation in these school events are a
privilege that will be available for scholars who meet the following criteria:
Academics: Scholar must be in good academic standing. This means, having a GPA of 2.0 or
higher
Behavior: Scholar must meet school-wide expectations. This means, earning less than 3
referrals a month and having no suspensions.
Attendance: Scholar must attend school on-time. This means, meeting the school-wide
attendance goal of 93% or higher.
Decisions about participation in non-academic school events may also be up to the discretion of
administration. Scholars who will not be participating will be notified the week of the event by
the Dean or Administration.
School Activities and Sports
Venture Prep offers many school-based activities during the school year. It is the expectation
that all VP scholars adhere to the policies set forth in this handbook when participating in
school- sponsored activities and events. These activities include: dances, athletic events, extracurricular functions, and after-school programming.
Clubs, Dances, and Recreational Events
Clubs will be developed as interest is expressed, driven by scholar and family initiatives. With
scholar organization and staff guidance, dances and other recreational events will be held for
VP scholars. A scholar must be in school on the day of an activity (minimum of three academic
classes) in order to participate in any activity. School attendance the day after the activity is
expected. Exceptions for unusual circumstances may be made by the administration. Scholars
who are on suspension or who have outstanding disciplinary action in process are not
permitted to attend dances or other events.
Signs and Posters
The principal or designee must approve any and all signs, fliers and posters. It is imperative
that the club or individual remove such signs once their purpose has been served or the event
16
has passed. Signs and Posters can be displayed on the Announcement Bulletin Boards, located
on each floor of the building.
Sports Programs & Extracurricular Experiences
Sports, adventure and fitness programs will be available at VP, including competitive game
opportunities and training in developmental skills. The Athletic Director for Venture Prep is
David Colicchio (dcolicchio@ventureprep.org).
Attendance and On-time Arrival Policy
“When you don’t set the right bar, you don’t get the right outcomes.”
It is the expectation that Venture Prep scholars are in school, on time, each and every day that
school is in session. Research has shown that a child who misses school frequently tends to fall
behind academically when compared to peers with strong attendance. Additionally, scholars
tend to become more disengaged with school overall if they miss school on a frequent basis.
Therefore, Venture Prep has set a school wide goal of a 93% attendance rate for the entire
school year. Parents, we need your help in reaching this goal!
During the course of the school year, we realize that scholars will become ill and be forced to
miss class time. In addition, there are family circumstances that will occur that will require a
scholar to be absent. As a school community, we will support our families when this is the
case. We ask that parents/guardians follow the protocols below:
Unexcused Absences
When a scholar is absent and the school has not been notified, the parent will receive an
automatic dialer phone call from the school for every class period missed, notifying the parent
that their child has been marked “unexcused absence”. Therefore, parents must call the main
office at 303-893-0805 to inform the school that their scholar will be absent, including the
reason(s) why the scholar will be absent. A scholar who is chronically marked “unexcused
absent” will be subject to the school’s retention policy.
Illness
If your scholar is ill and is unable to come to school, it is required that the parent/guardian call
the main office and notify the school of the absence. Likewise, if a scholar becomes ill while at
school, it is possible that the school nurse will ask that the child is picked up for the remainder
of the day. In the event of an extended medical absence of more than 3 days in a row, a
doctor’s note will be required.
Planned Absences
Prior to a planned absence (i.e. vacation, family emergency), scholars and parents must
obtain approval from the principal. Classwork arrangements and requests must be turned in
to the office 48 hours prior to the requested absence to ensure that arrangements have
been made to make up missed work. Venture Prep will excuse a planned absence for a
period not to exceed five (5) school days.
The administration has the right to accept or deny the absence based on previous attendance
records and/or academic performance. When extensive travel is involved for scholar
participation to sporting activities the principal will determine if scholars may be excused
early. Scholars will be given an unexcused absence for periods missed without prior approval.
17
Truancy
Scholars consistently absent without parental knowledge are considered to be truant. This
also includes when a child skips class or skips school altogether. These infractions are
considered to be in violation of the School Policy, and will be handled by the discretion of the
Principal. Scholars who are chronically truant will be subject to the codes and penalties of the
Denver County Truancy Courts. Please note that unexcused absences not verified by parents
also fall under truancy laws. The law specifies 4 unexcused absences per month or 10
unexcused absences per school year will result in a referral to the Denver County Truancy
Courts.
Attendance Protocols
Venture Prep monitors scholar attendance on a daily basis. When a scholar is absent and the
school has not been notified as to the reasons why, the following steps will be taken by the
school:
 Parents will receive an automated phone call from the school for every class period in
which a scholar is marked “unexcused absence”.
 Following multiple unexcused absences, the parents will receive a phone call by the
school Social Worker and/or the Administration.
 After the 5th unexcused absence, a letter is sent home to the parent/guardian
explaining the attendance concerns.
o The scholar will be discussed at the Attendance Review Committee and an
Attendance Contract will be implemented.
o Scholars and parents/guardians will receive a request to attend Attendance
Mediation Workshop and the scholar may be considered at risk for truancy
court filing.
Late Arrivals to School – Tardiness to School
 School begins promptly at 8:00 am every morning.
 Crew (8:00 am-8:27 am) is a class that all scholars are expected to participate in, and
scholars do receive credit hours towards graduation for successful completion of the
Crew curriculum.
 If scholars arrive in the building after class begins at 8:00 am, they must receive a Tardy
Pass from the Main Office. Scholars will receive an Unexcused Tardy unless the scholar
has a medical or legal appointment and can provide documentation. Please note, only
the time of the appointment and reasonable transportation time will be excused.
 A scholar with an unexcused tardy to school will receive “Pay it Back”.
 The school Social Worker and Administration will work directly with scholars and
families who are chronically late to school.
Late Arrivals to Class – Tardiness to Class
Scholars are allotted a 4 minute transition between classes. A scholar with an unexcused
tardy to class will receive “Tardy Pay it Back” after school.
Cell Phone & Personal Electronics Policy
Scholar engagement in the classroom is a priority at Venture Prep and essential in our College
Bound learning environment. There are many opportunities in the classroom to use technology
in a structured way. All classes at Venture Prep have integration of technology. Crew Leaders
will prepare scholars to learn by reminding scholars that all electronic devices (cell phones,
iPads, ear buds, headphones, etc.) need to be stored in lockers in order to set scholars up for a
18
successful day. Scholars are also welcome to drop their devices off with the Dean to be stored
in a locked, safe space for the day. Here are our school-wide expectations for electronics:





Electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, ear buds, headphones, wires, etc.) are not to be
powered on or visible during the school day between 8:00-11:19 and 11:47-3:30 (M-Th)
or 8:00-11:25 and 11:56-1:10 (Fri) anywhere on Venture Prep property.
Scholars are permitted to use electronic devices during breakfast or lunch in the
cafeteria.
Scholars are permitted to use electronic devices before and after school.
If communication during the day needs to take place between parent and scholar,
parents are invited to call the main office (303) 893-0805 and the office can relay a
message to the scholar.
Scholars are not allowed to charge cell phone in classrooms.
When the electronics policy and expectations are not followed, a referral to the Dean will be
written in Jupiter and the following steps will be taken:
Cell Phone/Electronics Enforcement:
 We confiscate cell phones/electronics (we hold them securely in the deans’
office) if they are seen or heard.
 The scholar’s parent, guardian, or adult designated by the guardian must come to
the school to pick up any cell phone/electronics.
 During the pick-up, a dean will review the electronics policy and expectations
with the scholar’s guardian.
 The scholar will serve an after-school Pay-it-Back for the infraction.
Dress Code Policy
Scholars are expected to be in Venture Prep Dress Code and to follow Venture Prep
expectations whenever on campus or at school sponsored events. The Dress Code begins the
moment scholars enter the door. This includes breakfast, lunch, and dismissal. Parents are
expected to ensure their scholar arrives to school on time and in proper dress, and to support
the school in our efforts to maintain a professional and spirited environment.
The Dress Code for all scholars includes:
 Tops: Scholars must wear a “Venture Prep” shirt or a collared shirt (like a polo or
button-down shirt).
 Bottoms: Scholars are expected to wear pants or skirts appropriate for learning.
 Hats and hoods are not permitted to be worn inside the building.
 Outerwear (ex: coats, hats, and gloves) and book bags (backpacks, slings, and purses
that act as book bags) must be left in lockers prior to the start of the school day and will
not be allowed in classrooms.
Dress Code Enforcement
If a scholar is not in Venture Prep Dress Code, a parent will be contacted and asked to
bring their scholar appropriate clothing for the day. Scholars will not be permitted into
the classroom until they meet Dress Code expectations.
19
*A scholar who borrows a clothing item from the office will be expected to leave collateral
to ensure the item is returned. An example of collateral may be a cell phone or a monthly
bus pass.
*Venture Prep reserves the right to deem an article of clothing inappropriate for a collegeand professional-bound school setting. All scholars are expected to adhere to the dress
code at all times.
Computer Policy
The policies, procedures and information within this document apply to all computers used
at Venture Prep, including any other device considered by the Administration to come under
this policy. Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their classroom.
Equipment
Venture Prep retains sole ownership of the computer and related equipment. The Technology
Department retains the right to collect and/or inspect any computer at any time without
notice.
Customization of Equipment
No scholar will be permitted to alter or add files to customize the computer to their own
working styles (i.e. System Preferences, iTunes account, etc.). All customization will be done
by the Venture Prep Technology Dept.
Damage or Loss of Equipment
In the event that any damage occurs to the computer or any attached device (keyboard,
mouse, etc.) it needs to be reported to the office of Venture Prep immediately. Each
individual case will be handled, and full replacement cost of the device may be required. All
discipline issues related to damage of the computer will be taken care of by the Venture Prep
administration.
Standards for computer Care
Scholar Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrate care for the computers:
2. Keep the computers free of stickers, markers, and other forms of decorations
3. Keep all serial numbers and identification marks on the computers.
4. Refrain from eating or drinking while in the lab and near computers
5. Leave all repairs to the Technology Director at the school.
6. Stay on task and on appropriate websites.
20
Campus Rules
Closed Campus: 9th-10th grade
Venture Prep is a closed campus for all 9th-10th grade scholars. Scholars are not
permitted to leave the campus/school grounds for any reason unless they make
previous arrangements with the office. Violators are considered to be truant. Scholars
may only leave the school when the parent or representative adult signs the scholar out
of the front office. There are no exceptions to this rule.
 11th and 12th graders may choose to eat lunch outside during their Lunch
Period. This privilege can be revoked at any time by the Principal.
Early Release
Junior and Senior scholars who are in good academic standing and on pace to graduate with
the necessary credits may be granted early release from school and will not have classes
scheduled for afternoon periods.
Driving
Scholars who drive to and from school must park on the surrounding streets. It is imperative
that scholars read all street signs to avoid ticketing. Students are not permitted to park in
the back parking lot of the school. We also strongly encourage scholars and parents to be
familiar with the state-mandated driving laws for teenagers. It is at the responsibility of the
scholar to abide by all state traffic laws.
21
Emergency Procedures
School Closure
Venture Prep is a part of the Denver Public School (DPS) System. When an announcement
is made that Denver Public Schools will be closed due to inclement weather, this means all
schools in the District will be closed for that day, including Venture Prep. In the event that
the Venture Prep Administration must announce emergency closures specific to our
school, a school official will announce the school closing and early dismissal information
through media outlets.
Should Venture Prep experience an actual inclement weather event, school e-newsletter
subscribers will receive an email closing alert message informing them that schools are
closed.
Classroom Procedures for Severe Weather
Upon hearing the City and County of Denver’s Emergency Alarm and PA
announcement:
 Listen for the PA announcement to activate the Severe Weather
Procedures.
 Teachers will direct the scholars to their assigned safe shelter area (usually
hallways). Scholars will leave all belongings behind, including books, bags, coats,
etc.
 Scholars will move quickly, quietly and orderly to their assigned areas.
 Scholars will wait for instructions.
 Teachers will take an attendance sheet or similar document with them.
 Teachers will make sure the classroom door is closed after the last person has left the
room. Teachers/Administrators will check to make sure all scholars are out of
bathrooms. Teachers will instruct the scholars to line up and sit down against the
inside wall of the hallway and be prepared to assume the Tornado Protective Kneeling
Position. (See Below)
 Teachers will keep scholars calm.
Tornado Protective Kneeling Position:
 Kneel or crouch on your knees and elbows, with your head between your knees and
your hands clasp over the back of your head.
When the storm is imminent instruct the scholars to:
 Assume the protective kneeling position with their hands covering the back of their
necks and their faces protected by the floor and their knees.
 Remain in this position until instructed otherwise.
After the storm passes:
 Check all scholars for injuries
 Take attendance
22

Report the status of your class to the administrator in the predetermined
manner. Follow any further instructions from the Administrator.
General Emergency Information:





The city alarm may be sounded in your area when the storm is in another part of the
city.
Practice of these procedures will help reduce confusion and will keep everybody
calmer in the case of an actual weather emergency.
These procedures should be reviewed and practiced a minimum of once per semester.
The Office of Emergency Management, City and County of Denver, notifies DPS Safety
and Security of all weather emergencies.
The District has supplied each school with a Midland, Model # 74-200, and Weather
Radio.
DPS Safety and Security Office and the Public Information Office are available as resources for
information on current weather emergencies; BUT the school is ultimately responsible for
onsite verification of weather conditions and comparison to the weather information
available, in order to put the Severe Weather-Tornado procedures for the school into action.

Fire Drills, Lock Downs, and Shelter in Place
State law mandates that schools conduct regular safety drills, including fire drills, lock
downs, tornado drills, and shelter in place exercises.
Upon the sounding of the fire alarm, scholars must SILENTLY proceed immediately out of the
building in an orderly fashion under the direction of staff. All scholars must move well away
from the building and keep out of roadways, giving fire equipment free access to all areas.
Scholars must stay with their respective class or groups and remain outside until signaled to
return to the building. Under no circumstances should anyone delay exiting the building by
stopping at another location such as lockers or restrooms. Talking and running are not
permitted during a fire drill. Scholars who talk, run, or show any type of disorderly conduct
will be referred to the administration and risk suspension from school.
Fire drill exits are posted in each classroom. When scholars are in the cafeteria, they are to
follow the exit route posted in the cafeteria, stay together in a large group well off the
roadway under the supervision of staff.
During lock-downs, bad weather drills, or shelter in place exercises, scholars must remain in
designated areas and closely follow all directions by staff. Scholars who refuse to follow
staff instructions during safety drills are subject to severe sanctions.
23
Enrollment
Policies and Procedures
Venture Prep is a public charter school invested in creating exceptional learning experiences
for all scholars, with a specific focus towards college readiness. Venture Prep does not
discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality or ethnic origin in admission and schooladministered programs and seeks to maintain a diverse population. We believe that a
diverse community furthers the educational goals of the scholars and the school community.
Our school is open to all residents and non-residents in accordance with state law and DPS
policy; however, priority is given to scholars who live within the boundaries of the Denver
Public School District.
Lottery
If we receive more applications than available spaces, enrollment is determined by a
lottery system. In order to be included in the lottery, scholars must submit an application
for admission prior to the application deadline. Any applications received after the lottery
will be added to the bottom of the waitlists in the order they were received. All complete
applications turned in by the deadline will be eligible for the lottery. The lottery is
completed using a random computer sort. Each applicant receives a random number and
the order is therefore determined. This process starts over each school year. Wait lists are
not carried over from year to year. Applying scholars must re-apply each year. Scholars
who are already enrolled at Venture Prep will continue to be registered provided they
meet the related school registration requirements. All waitlists are managed by DPS.
*Applications are considered complete only if all areas, including the scholar portion &
family information, are complete and the school has received all requested
documentation.
In the event that there is no waitlist and there are available spaces in the school,
scholars may enroll during the first four weeks of each semester. To register you will
need:
• Verification of the scholar’s date of birth (birth certificate or other documentation);
• Immunization records;
• Proof of your home address (something mailed to your address, such as a utility bill or
copy of a lease); and
• Name and address of the scholar’s previous school (if you are transferring from
another school district) so that academic records may be obtained.
Special Education
Like all public schools, Venture Prep provides special education services to scholars who
qualify. Families of scholars with special needs must provide the school with the most
current IEP (Individualized Education Plan) in order for the application to be considered
complete. Scholars with identified needs (i.e. Special Education) may require a meeting
with the principal and SPED Department Chair to determine appropriate scheduling and
service hours. All IEP paperwork is required and reviewed by the Administration prior to
final enrollment. If applicable, a representative from DPS will be included in this
enrollment process.
24
Sibling/Household and Alumni Policy
It is the intent of the Venture Prep to support whole families and create school community.
Siblings of enrolled scholars will receive priority for admission if their applications are
received by the designated deadline. Families may also apply for household priority.
Household priority is given when a child who is not a sibling, lives with a current family. In this
situation, custody papers or other legal documentation must be provided to claim priority.
Alumni scholars/families receive priority with guardianship or residency changes.
Staff Policy
Children of full-time staff members will receive priority for admission if their applications are
received by the designated deadline. These children will be allowed to remain in the school
regardless of whether or not the parent/guardian remains employed by the school. The total
number of scholars enrolled under the Staff Policy will not exceed 10% of the school's
population.
Ground for Denial of Admission
A scholar who has been expelled from any school district the preceding twelve months; or
who has engaged in behavior in another school during the preceding twelve months that is
detrimental to the welfare or safety of other scholars or of school personnel may be denied
admission to the school. This is in-line with the school’s college-bound focus.
Registration
All scholars offered admission into Venture Prep will be expected to complete the entire
admission process, which includes:
1. Parents must complete both the Venture Prep application and the DPS Choice
Form for their Scholars. These forms can be accessed and returned via the
Venture Prep Main Office.
2. Scholars and Parents will need to participate in mandatory orientation session prior
to the start of the school year. This orientation will include the necessary information
and expectations of a college-prep high school.
3. Scholars and Parents will need to submit any supplemental materials prior to
stated due date.
4. All mid-year transfers will require a 1:1 meeting with the Principal prior to
enrollment.
5. Scholars with identified needs (i.e. Special Education) may require a meeting with
the Principal and SPED Department Chair to determine appropriate scheduling
and service hours. All IEP paperwork is required prior to final enrollment.
Venture Prep policy states that a scholar may not begin classes at Venture Prep until the
school has received all transcript and cumulative file information. Failure to complete all
admission requirements may result in removal of scholar from the enrollment roster.
Emergency Information Forms
Emergency Information Forms are kept on file so that school staff is aware of scholars’
medical information and have the ability to reach a parent or guardian at any time. Please let
25
us know as soon as possible whenever there is a change in address, telephone number, place
of employment or emergency contact person, or when there is a change in a scholar’s
medical information.
Free and Reduced Meals
The Free and Reduced Lunch Program offers scholars a free lunch or a reduced price lunch,
based on family income. The program is completely confidential and you may apply for free
and reduced price meals at any time during the school year. Venture Prep offers free
breakfast to all scholars between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. each day. We highly encourage all
scholars to eat breakfast prior to the start of the school day. Regardless of whether you
choose to eat at home or at the school, all families must complete the DPS Lunch Form,
located in the Main Office.
Open Meetings Law Policy
Per the Charter Schools Act, the Venture Prep Board of Directors will follow the Open
Meetings Law that allows members of the public to attend any Venture Prep board meetings
at which business of the school is conducted. The meeting dates of upcoming meeting and
meeting minutes of past sessions are listed on the website.
Medical Policies
Records and Physical Exams
In order to enroll at Venture Prep every scholar must have an up-to-date physical, health
records, including immunizations. Scholars will be excluded from school until that record is
provided or until parent or guardian provides record of an upcoming medical appointment.
Medications
If a scholar requires medication during school hours, the distribution of the medications will be
supervised by the Office Manager or Nurse under the following guidelines required by state
law:




Prescription medications must be supplied in the original pharmacy container.
The container must be identified with the following information: Scholar name, Name
of Medication, Doctor’s Name and Phone Number, Pharmacy and Phone Number.
Parents/guardians must sign the appropriate administration forms.
Non-prescription medications must also be supplied in the original container and must
be accompanied by written instructions from a physician and consent from
parent/guardian.
All medication must be placed in a locked box in the main office. In order to administer any
prescribed medication to a scholar or child, there must be a doctor’s note on file. For any
over the counter medication, a note signed by the parent with directions must be present.
Furthermore, a log will be kept on file that indicates (1) Name of Scholar, (2) Name of
Medication, (3) Date, (4) Time, and (5) Whom Dispensed Medication.
Scholars are responsible for coming to the main office to receive their medications at
the appropriate time. Scholars are not allowed to have medications in their possession
or in their lockers. This includes any over the counter medications.
26
Illness During School Hours
If a scholar is sick (feverish, pink-eye or has flu-like symptoms) in the morning, the school
expects him or her to stay home for the day. If a scholar becomes ill or injured during the
school day and is not well enough to stay in class, the parent will be called to pick the child
up. We do not have the capacity to watch over and care for ill children. It is necessary to
have updated emergency contact numbers on file in the school office in case no one can be
contacted at home. If a scholar needs to take medicine while at school, a consent form must
be filled out in the main office. All medications, other than inhalers, are kept in the office
and dispensed from there.
Support Services
A school nurse, psychologist, and speech pathologist are assigned to our school by DPS and
are available to all scholars on a revolving work schedule. Please see the Office Manager
for a staffing schedule of support service providers.
