Developing the computing curriculum for September 2014
Overview
Three sessions:



Tuesday 29th April 1:45-3:45
Wednesday 21st May 3:30-5:00
Tuesday 24th June 1:45-3:45
I will be leading the three sessions and I am keen to make the time as productive as
possible. I have put together a general plan, having looked at the ‘next steps’. However,
we may wish to adapt the sessions as we go.
I haven’t planned to devote too much time to e-safety because it is a huge job in itself and I
don’t think we will have time to do it justice within the three sessions, particularly if we are
focusing on implementation of coding/ computer programming. However, we can look at
examples of good practice and useful links to other sources of support and guidance.
A little bit about the St Margaret’s journey …
This year, we have been working with a 1:1 ratio ipad:child in Y5/6 and 1:2 or 1:3 ratio in Y14 and we are in a good position to give advice on effective use of tablets and the potential
pitfalls if you are thinking of embarking on the mobile tech journey. You’ll also have the
opportunity to look at what children are doing and speak to teachers about their
experiences. You can also have a look at what’s happening in ‘code club’ and how you
might adapt the materials to curriculum planning in your own schools.
Proposed aims of the three sessions
To formulate a plan to present to your school’s leadership that will outline how the
statutory provision of computing will be taught within the academic year 2013/14 and
beyond, including:




proposed software and hardware use, including budget implications
proposed staff training, including budget implications
infrastructure e.g. wifi and associated budget implications
timetabling e.g. when and how will elements of computing curriculum be taught?

recording children’s work
Proposed plan for the three sessions
session 1

mainly hands on, looking at a range of software, hardware and planning documents
including:
o espresso coding
o hopscotch
o scratch (and related code club lesson plans which could be used in class)
o cargobot
o beebot
o kodable
session 2


putting together an action plan to present to school leaders
looking at e-safety good practice models
session 3

following feedback from respective school leadership, develop action plans and develop
network between schools e.g. sharing good practice, planning for joint INSET, developing
links between school technicians, exploring best practice nationally and internationally
