Course description: This introductory course will meet state expectations for professional development on the Characteristics of Effective Instruction for reading, math, science, social studies and 21st Century Skills in the Iowa Core. Educators will study and implement the Gradual Release of Responsibility framework which includes Productive Group Work in the content areas. Leadership teams are encouraged to attend and plan for dissemination of this content in their district/building in the following year. Extensive coaching support is a part of participating in this course. Course outcomes and evaluation: Outcome 1: Knowledge Goal: Teachers and administrators will identify the components of effective instruction. Evaluation: Teachers will score at 90% or higher on a written assessment (pre/post). Outcome 2: Skill Goal: Teachers will become reflective practitioners with regards to focus lessons and productive group work. Evaluation: Teachers will analyze, assess and provide feedback regarding instructional practices with a peer - schedule to be determined by building leadership team. Outcome 3: Behavior Goal: All teachers implement the characteristics/components of effective of instruction through productive group work and focus lessons. Evaluation: Indicators of Success for Productive Group work and Indicators of Success for Purpose and Modeling to monitor teacher implementation rubrics will be used. The score is determined by instructor and trainers from observations during coaching sessions. Data collection on average student achievement and group work skills for each unit during the year is collected, reported and analyzed. Implementation logs will be kept on frequency and amount of time for both focus lessons and productive group work. Due Date Each session will have a reading assignment or 4 assigned readings. 3 required observations by April 14. Required at November, January and April sessions. A summary reflection of the year will be due May 15. Monthly reports required to be emailed to trainer on the last day of the month for October, November, January, March and April. Grade 14-16 score on the rubric = A or Pass Other 12-13 score on the rubric = B or Pass 10-11 score on the rubric = C 8-9 score on the rubric = D Less than 8 score on the rubric = F Note: 100% attendance is required to pass any course offered through the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency. Participants taking the course for Relicensure must earn an “A” or “B” to pass the course. All the course work needs to be completed. Student impact statement: Students will state and understand the “purpose/focus” for a lesson and become proficient in working collaboratively while using Employability Skills during classwork.Student achievement will increase in classrooms of teachers using the CEI.
