Application for Spring 2016
Dear Homestead Program Applicant:
We are glad you are interested in joining the Homestead community. Attached is the application to live at
the Homestead. Please answer the application questions and consider the statement of intent carefully.
Return completed applications via email to Thomas Henshaw, Homestead Coordinator, at
henshawt@denison.edu no later than 12:00 Thursday November, 19. We will not accept late applications.
Criteria considered in evaluating the applications include applicants' previous involvement in Homestead
events and commitment and motivation stated in the application. If accepted, applicants are given the
chance to decide whether to accept the invitation. It is possible, though not likely, that the Homestead may
reach a consensus to not extend invitations to fill any or all spots available. Please note that preference will
be given to rising sophomore and junior applicants.
If you have questions regarding the application process, please contact Tom Henshaw, Homestead
Coordinator at henshawt@denison.edu
Please read carefully before completing this application:
In accordance with the Office of Campus & Residential Life housing policies, students who are not eligible
for satellite housing due to issues with suspension or disciplinary probation cannot be considered for the
Homestead Program. Students who have been previously suspended, who are on Disciplinary Probation for
a major violation at the time of lottery and students who have violated any section of the student code of
conduct after having been on Disciplinary Probation are not permitted to live in satellite housing. By
submitting this application, you authorize the Homestead Advisory Board to verify that you are an eligible
candidate.
Upon acceptance to the Homestead, residents sign a Homestead specific residential housing contract. In
that spirit, we incorporate the following statement of intent for applicants to the Homestead:
Submission of this application represents my serious intent to live at the Homestead and my
recognition of the privileges and responsibilities involved in Homestead life. These
responsibilities include respectful participation in the Homestead living/learning community,
compliance with the Homestead mission (see below), and active presence at Homestead activities
including dinners, meetings, work parties, and seminar. If invited to live at the Homestead, I will
seriously consider these commitments in deciding whether to accept this invitation.
Homestead Mission Statement:
The Homestead is an ever-evolving experiment in community that is inhabited and maintained by Denison
University students with strong commitments to a socioenvironmentally-responsible life ethic. We chose to
live simply by using only technology that we deem appropriate and by making every effort to be fully
conscious of the social and environmental impacts of our consumption. Our philosophies are brought to life
through their practical application within the parameters of our academic setting. The Homestead family
encourages enrichment of the self and community through exploration and expression of our individual and
collective creativity, ideas, emotions, and intellect. Our dynamic community nurtures life experiences that
are self-affirming and empowering. These experiences contribute significantly to our future endeavors and
create a collective spirit that unites the Homestead past and present. We open our arms to the greater global
community to share with us the wonders embodied in the Homestead.

Please take as much space as you need to respond to the following questions. Feel free to
combine answers and answer questions in any order. Please answer each question
seriously.
1. What would living at the Homestead mean to you, and what does the Homestead have
to offer you as an individual?
2. The livelihood of the Homestead depends on the dedicated physical and intellectual
work of the community. There are many areas to contribute to. What sorts of helpful
skills do you have, and towards what projects, or in what ways might you implement
these skills to enhance the Homestead experience? What do you hope to learn from living
at the homestead? Please be as specific as possible.
3. Even though you may not have thought of it as such, you are a part of many
communities: your town, family, friends, even your dorm. How would you describe the
Homestead as a community to someone who is not familiar with it?
4. At the Homestead, we live in close quarters with other diverse people. Although there
is a general feeling of friendliness, problems can arise. How do you approach personal
conflicts? Name a time when you experienced a personal conflict with another
individual, and how you worked to solve that conflict.
5. An important part about living at the Homestead is realizing the truly living-learning
nature of the experience. Please spend some time investigating the Homestead Digital
Archive (link available under the archive tab on the webpage). Pick a feature or event
from the Homestead’s past and elaborate how that event provided an educational
opportunity for the Homestead and the campus at large.
6. Living at the Homestead demands a certain amount of time and labor from its
residents. These include attending Saturday work parties, dinners, weekly meetings, and
seminar. Do you foresee any potential conflicts with participating in any of these tasks?
7. Homesteaders pride themselves on being diverse members of many campus
organizations. However, problems arise when these organizations too frequently conflict
with the necessary work as described above. What are your time commitments and
activities throughout the school year? Please be specific.
8. The Homestead never takes a break. Will you be willing to give up a break or two to
tend to the Homestead? Please underline those that apply.

9. Are you planning to spend a semester off-campus at some point during your remaining
