Dear Parents,
This year the Glenview Media Center is participating in Battle of the Books with the other
middle schools in Anderson District 5. The final competition will be during the morning of
March 27th at Glenview Middle School.
Battle of the Books is a reading comprehension competition that tests students’ reading,
studying, and teamwork skills. During the competition, teams are asked questions about the
content of the books they have read and studied during the previous months.
Five students may form a team by making arrangements with the media specialist. No changes
in membership can be made to a team once it has been formed. If a member is absent during
competition, the remaining players play as a team with a pre-determined substitute. If
necessary, there will be an elimination competition at each school to determine the top two
teams to send to competition.
Each student will be required to read five of the ten selected books. Together, we will schedule
time for each group to work together and discuss the books during lunch. We will have several
practice competitions to get them used to the process. If an elimination competition is
necessary, it will happen the last two weeks in February.
This is an extracurricular activity. If your child is interested, talk with them about the time
involved and whether it might interfere with their academic work. We will need your
permission, as well as the student’s signature, that they will stay with their group until
competition is completed at the end of March. Both signatures also indicate understanding that
it is the responsibility of the student to complete any missed classwork due to participation in
the Battle of the Books competition on March 27th.
Attached is the permission slip required for participation in this activity. Your child should
return it to me in the Media Center in order to participate.
I think this activity will be great fun as well as beneficial to the participants. All parents and
family members are invited to attend the competition on March 27th. If you have any
questions, please contact me at andreaknight@anderson5.net.
Thank you for your support.
