Dear Society Liverymen and Freemen
SOCIETY PRESIDENT’S DINNER
THURSDAY 19th MARCH 2015
CLOTHWORKERS’ HALL, DUNSTER COURT, MINCING LANE, EC3
The Society’s President’s Dinner will be held this year at Clothworkers Hall and promises to be a splendid
occasion, as again it is a hall which the Society has not dined at before.
The Worshipful Company of Clothworkers was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1528, formed by the
amalgamation of its two predecessor Companies, the Fullers (incorporated 1480) and the Shearmen
(incorporated 1508). It succeeded to the position of the Shearmens' Company and thus ranks twelfth in the order
of precedence of Livery Companies of the City of London. The present hall is the sixth livery hall to stand upon
the site. The interiors evoke the history of English Classicism from Wren to the present day and include portraits
of notable Clothworkers - including Samuel Pepys - and a stunning set of 18th Century Brussels tapestries.

Brussels Tapestry
Our guest speaker will be Sir Paul Clarke KCVO FRICS, a highly esteemed member of the property profession,
who now sits on number of advisory committees and boards of property-related organisations in a non-executive
capacity. From 2000 to 2013 Sir Paul was Clerk of the Council, Chief Executive and Surveyor General of the
Duchy of Lancaster, which is a private estate owned by Her Majesty The Queen, as Duke of Lancaster, and
which provides a source of private revenue for her. The rural estate consists of 18,454 hectares (45,500 acres) of
land in England and Wales and comprises commercial, agricultural and residential property. In July 2013 the
Queen personally conferred a Knighthood on Paul during a private ceremony in recognition of his services as
Clerk of the Council and I am sure he will give us a most interesting talk on his times working for the Queen
and managing her estate. More information on the Duchy is available at www.duchyof lancaster.co.uk.
Due to rising hall hire costs and catering costs, we have unfortunately had to increase the ticket prices of the
dinner this year. We do feel that it is important to maintain the quality of the food and wine at the Society’s
dinners, and there are only a limited number of different halls which can accommodate us. The Society’s dinners
are also one of the relatively few opportunities for Liverymen and Freemen to participate in the life of the
Company and we very much wish to continue the tradition for the President’s Dinner to be a friends and family
occasion, with spouses and siblings always most welcome. The cost of the dinner is £77.50 for Liverymen &
Freemen and £82.50 for Guests and if you would like to attend, please complete the booking form attached and
return it with payment to the Society’s Events Co-ordinator, Chris Nicholls at: events@fleurgifts.com or
alternatively by post (details on the form).
I do hope you will be able to join us on the 19th and I look forward to seeing you then.
With kind regards,
Matt Sutton
President 2014-15
