JOB DESCRIPTION Retail Manager (Scotland) Reports to: Bookshop Council Organisational context The Faith Mission (the Mission) exists to reach people with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As an interdenominational agency, it works closely with Christian churches that share a similar concern for passionate evangelism and evangelical truth, especially in areas where there is little or no biblical witness. FM Bookshops is the literature ministry of The Faith Mission, an important and integral part of the wider work and ministry of The Faith Mission and as it is positioned on the high street of many towns and cities in Northern Ireland and Scotland, it provides a neutral location where people can explore the Christian faith through literature and conversation. Job purpose The Retail Manager (Scotland) is a senior leadership appointment and they will work under the direction of The Faith Mission Bookshop Council and will be responsible for directing all bookshop and cafe retail operations, staff and volunteers in Scotland. Providing strategic leadership, the Retail Manager (Scotland) will be responsible for the performance of the bookshops in Scotland so that they actively promote the Christian Faith in alignment with the goals of The Faith Mission. They will be required to achieve the financial performance as detailed within their annual plan in order to secure the long term future of the literature ministry and contribute an agreed percentage of their profits to support the wider work of The Faith Mission. Role and Responsibilities Leadership Responsibilities JOB DESCRIPTION Retail Manager (Scotland) • Directs the retail operations of the bookshops and cafés in Scotland to deliver a bottom line result that provides a dividend to support the evangelistic and biblical training work of the Mission. • Implements general policies established by The Faith Mission Board and Bookshop Council; directing their administration and execution. • Creates a culture that is fully aligned with The Faith Mission’s values, where the highest ethical standards are evident, where all staff are valued and where the Christian Faith can be articulated clearly to enquirers at every location within the bookshop chain. • Directs, through branch managers and staff, the ongoing operations and development of bookshop ministries within the scope of the organisation’s mission and vision Develops an effective leadership structure with a focus on future succession planning Financial Management Develops and maintains a three year strategic plan for their bookshop chain Conducts financial reviews with branch managers on a monthly basis Liaises regularly with the Finance Department and Accountancy teams Monitors cash-flow and authorises supplier invoices for payment Stock and Supplier Management Oversees all book and gift purchasing in line with agreed budgets and the Mission’s ethos Monitors stock turnover levels and other key performance measures of the buying function Develops and maintains senior leadership relations with suppliers and other partners Monitors overstocks, quick turnover items and slow moving lines to improve stock turnover JOB DESCRIPTION Retail Manager (Scotland) Staff Development Conducts regular performance reviews and annual appraisals of all senior? staff Oversees a training programme to develop staff competence in customer service In consultation with HR Director, ensures that staff recruitment is undertaken in compliance with HR best practice and Faith Mission policy Ensures that all staff are treated fairly and that they are supported to achieve their potential Works in cooperation with the Director of Bookshop Ministries to align the bookshops with the ministry aims of the Mission and supports their pastoral ministry and staff devotional days Store Development All store development to be done in conjunction with the Property Manager Actively develops and manages all facets of retail development and stock purchasing Plans, designs and facilitates store layout and look of new and existing retail locations Implements and monitors standard operating procedures within the bookshop chain Actively plans and promotes retail signage in compliance with the Mission’s branding policy Oversees the security, stability and ongoing development of all POS technologies Delegated Authority • Manages the day to day operations of bookshop chain in line with agreed budgets • Approves new suppliers within a structured supplier management process • Authorises suppliers invoices JOB DESCRIPTION Retail Manager (Scotland) Personal Qualities and Core Competencies • Ability to operate effectively in a demanding, fast paced, team environment • Demonstrate ability to be self-motivated and take initiative • Excellent customer service skills • An understanding of profit and loss and key financial management ratios • Excellent organisational skills, time management and computer skills • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to work a flexible schedule, and travel extensively within the branch network • Strong work ethic • Must pay good attention to detail It is an occupational requirement in terms of Equality Act 2010 that the person fulfilling this role is: • a committed Christian in full sympathy with The Faith Mission’s Statement of Faith • actively supportive of the wider work of The Faith Mission • views this role as a Ministry Calling
