2015-16 COURSE SELECTIONS “Things to Consider when Selecting” This document is designed to assist students/parents in the course selection process. Please review the information below to ensure you are covering all options in the selection process. Some options require additional steps so plan accordingly. Use the 2015-16 Curriculum & Registration Guide for additional information http://www.orange.k12.nc.us/academic_dept_pages/sec_ed_docs/HS_CourseGuide.pdf Graduation Requirements--28 credits 4 English=English 1, 2, 3 & 4 4 Math= Math 1, 2, 3 & Advanced 3 Science= Earth, Biology, Physical 4 Social St.=World, Amer 1, 2, & Civics 1 PE= 9th Health & PE 2 Designated Electives in the areas of 4 Cluster=related courses CTE, Arts or World Language Honors For students earning an 88 or higher in their standard level courses should consider trying honors level courses in their area of strength or interest. Honors courses are available in both core and elective areas--challenge yourself. See course guide for details. Advanced Placement (AP) AP courses are College Board approved college level courses taught in high school. AP courses are available in many subject areas in person or online (see below). 10th grade students should review their PLAN results and use the guide sent to them via email to see if they are on track for these courses. These courses are rigorous and demand both your time and attention to be successful. Students are expected to take the AP exam associated with each course. International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB) The IB program is available to interested 11th and 12th graders. However, the planning begins in 9th grade. Students should take honors courses in preparation for this program as well as have at least the following courses completed by the end of 10th grade: English 2 Hon, Civics Hon, Math 3 Hon or Pre-calculus, Honors Chemistry or AP Environmental, World Language Level 3. Use the course guide and the planning tool below to ensure you are prepared, if interested. There is an application requirement. NCVPS--North Carolina Virtual High School Courses If you are looking for different course opportunities, you may want to consider online offerings. Steps to take: ● Visit www.ncvps.org to see what courses are available for both Fall and Spring semesters. ● Choose a course, students may take a new course or a credit recovery course. ● Complete the “NCVPS Course Request Form” signed by parent. ● Submit the “request form” to your counselor for administrative approval. Note: Requests may be given priority based on available funding. Orange County Board Policy prohibits students from enrolling in a course that is available “face to face” as there is a cost involved with each course. College & Career Promise (CCP) Students have an opportunity to take community college courses for credit while in high school (free tuition). The CCP program includes courses in the college transfer (Core 44) pathway or towards Career & Technical certification. Students may enroll through either Durham Tech or Alamance Community College. College Transfer Pathway--Core 44 Students must qualify by GPA and College Admission Test Scores--see below. *Students must have a 3.0 weighted GPA and *Meet the minimum exam scores TEST PLAN Score PSAT Score SAT Score ACT Score English 15 45 500 18 Reading 18 47 500 22 Mathematics 19 47 500 22 Career & Technical Pathway Students must have a 3.0 weighted GPA and principal recommendations. Students must meet all course prerequisites. Steps to take: ● Attend an information session hosted by Durham Tech or Alamance Community College ● Complete an online application through www.cfnc.org indicating CCP in the program choice and send transcript. ● CRHS will confirm GPA and test scores for eligibility ● Upon verification, meet with a community college advisor to discuss and plan your courses. ● Confirm course enrollment and meet with counselor to adjust your CRHS schedule to accommodate the CCP courses. ● Stay focused during the course as you have begun your college transcript. Students may apply to attend Middle College on the Durham Tech campus in January of their 10th grade year for the following two years. These students have an opportunity to take their remaining high school requirements with other area students and attend community college classes. This program offers a unique learning opportunity. Visit http://www.edlinesites.net/pages/Middle_College for addtional information and application. 4-YEAR PLANNING When planning courses it is helpful to keep the end in mind and plan backwards. For instance, if you have a strong interest in science and know that you want to take AP Biology, look to see what prerequisite courses are required and enter them in the appropriate years. Keep in mind every student is unique having their own interests and abilities which tend to change. Use the chart below to begin planning your 4-years of high school. Then use this information for entering your course selections for next year into PowerSchool (see handout Guide for assistance).
