COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to basic statistical terminology, organization of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, review of combinations, permutations, and probability, binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing, and a variety of other statistical techniques. COURSE OBJECTIVES Successful completion of this course should enable students to understand and apply the following concepts: summarizing, graphing, describing and comparing data; probability, discrete and normal probability distributions; hypothesis testing; inferences from two samples; correlation and regression. This course can be completed using public computers at TCC or other public access areas. However, be aware that using public computers may create a hardship. TECHNICAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS You should be comfortable with the following: using email for communication navigating the Internet downloading appropriate plugins using an Internet search engine TEACHING METHODS Each class will begin by answering questions about the material covered in the previous classes. The remainder of the class will be used for presentation of new material using lecture and demonstration led by the instructor with student participation and questions being encouraged. Course documents and announcements will be posted on the BlackBoard website for your access. Communications may also be made using the college e-mail system, so you should check these sources of information on a regular basis. ATTENDANCE AND TIME COMMITMENT Attendance (and regular participation in the online classroom) is essential for maintaining the best learning environment. Learning occurs in relationship not only between student and course materials, but, just as importantly, peer to peer, professor to student, and student to professor. Your notes, homework, and textbook can be used as references. Exams – Nine exams will be given on the dates shown on the schedule found on the last page of this syllabus. The exams will include topics previously discussed in class with emphasis on topics covered since the last exam. You may use books or notes during exams. You will be allowed to use YOUR calculator to assist with exam completion. If you are absent on an exam day, you will receive 'zero' score for that exam. Grading Scale - The points earned for homework, exams, and final exam will determine your grade for the course using the scale shown below. COURSE WITHDRAWAL: Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for the deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawal and/or change to an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty, a faculty member may: Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test; Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question; Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class; Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
