Journal Review for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Background:
The Australian higher education research environment is undergoing fundamental change. In a nutshell, the funding system will shift from an
emphasis on quantity of research output, to an emphasis on quality and impact of research. This federal government reform is referred to as the
ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia). As a consequence, it is essential (even more essential than it always was) that we both conduct
high quality research and target our research at the highest quality journals where it will have the most impact.
The purpose of this journal ranking summary is to provide guidance for your choice of research outlets.

ARC journal ranking: The Australian Research Council developed a journal ranking list in all disciples as part of their ERA (Excellence in
Research for Australia) reform.
The ranking exercise adopted a four tier scheme as follows:
A*:
top 5% of journals in discipline
A
top 6-20% of journals in discipline
B
top 21-50% of journals in discipline
C
journals not in the top 50%
A*- A Ranking: Leading Entrepreneurship and Innovation Journals
These are very good journals within the entrepreneurship and innovation discipline and represent the most desirable targets. They represent the
outlets of choice for our research that has sufficient quality to reach these journals.

significant resources and predicted to achieve A* status. Foundations and Trends is a review article outlet of some standing. Small Enterprise Research is
Australian and thus a suitable secondary outlet for Australia-specific angles of research published internationally as well. While some of the others may be
worthwhile at times the reality is that few colleagues ever read or cite what is published in most of these journals. Before you submit anything you may want to
perform the following check: Go to scholar.google.com. Click on Advanced scholar search. Enter the Journal’s name in the ‘Return articles published in’ field,
and press ‘Search Scholar’. You will now learn how often the best cited articles in this journal have been cited in any context, including by the same author. If
the number is a single digit you may want to reconsider and do what it takes to make a submission to a better acknowledged journal instead.
