COMMUNIY
Norwalk is situated in the Southwest corner of Connecticut, and is
served by two comprehensive high schools and one alternative
school. We are fortunate to have an extremely diverse population;
Brien McMahon High School is a reflection of this community.
SCHOOL
Brien McMahon High School is a four-year comprehensive high
school. We believe that students learn best when they are engaged in
their own learning, when there are clear and consistent expectations
and when there is a safe, supportive, respectful and collaborative
learning environment. Enrollment: 1696; Professional Staff: 140.
Brien McMahon High School graduated 353 students in June 2014.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
All subjects at the high school level are assigned units of credit
values. The number of class sessions and the amount of preparation
necessary to achieve a satisfactory standard of performance
determine these values. The values used by the Norwalk schools are
equivalent to those assigned by other secondary schools and
institutions of higher learning. All students are required to complete
a minimum of 20 credits for graduation. Graduation requirements

ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Brien McMahon High School offers 23 AP courses and 36 Honors
courses. A total of 477 Advanced Placement Examinations were
administered to 244 students in May of 2014. Of those students,
287 students scored 3 or higher. Advanced Placement and Honors
courses are offered in the following subjects*: English, Math, Social
Studies, Science, World Languages, Art, Music and Business
Technology *Not all AP courses are offered every year.
COURSE CODES
This is a four-digit number. The first two numbers going from left
to right designates the department, i.e. 00 is English, 11 is Math, 22
is Social studies, etc. The third digit is merely administrative data
processing expediency and has no educational significance. A T
indicates Transfer, S indicates Summer and A indicates APEX
credit recovery. Advanced Placement, Honors and Advanced
courses are indicated in their titles.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Concurrent Enrollment: We offer 8 UCONN Early College
Experience courses approved for college credit through the
UCONN Cooperative Program.
STEM Education: We offer the 5 courses in the Pathway to
Engineering Program which is certified by Project Lead the Way.
PLTW courses are accepted for college credit at more than 35
colleges and universities.

CLASS RANK
Class rank is calculated using all subjects. GPA is based on a 4.0
scale. AP courses are weighted with one additional quality point.
Beginning with the 2012-2013 school years, Honors courses carry
an additional .5 quality point.
The Center for Global Studies (CGS), an inter-district magnet
school for grades 9-12, housed in Brien McMahon High School,
CGS provides students from Fairfield County schools the
opportunity to study Chinese, Japanese, and Middle Eastern culture
through language, literature, and history classes. Students take
math, science, physical education, and other courses within the
comprehensive Brien McMahon High School program.
The ELL (English Language Learners) Program provides classes in
English, Math, Science and History.
ACCREDITATION
BMHS received its accreditation from the New England Association
of Schools and Colleges.
