This means that there will be a recognition of the great privilege we have in being ordained ministers and that we need to treat this as service and vocation rather than a job. There must be genuine love for the Church as well as its people; and this love and service is supported with real and genuine prayer. The assistant priest must be able to relate to and interact with the many people who walk through our doors. The Cathedral is rather unique in that people from all walks of life come through here. We welcome people who are drawn to us for music, services, and events and also those who are simply lonely and looking for a place to belong. With them comes a whole spectrum of political and theological persuasions. The ideal candidate will be able to see them all in the same light as children of God, and have the humility and heart to work with all of them. It is also important that those applying have an appreciation for the full spectrum of Anglican worship that is offered at the Cathedral. We expect that the successful applicant would be a competent preacher and liturgist as demanded by a Cathedral setting, but we are especially looking for someone gifted in teaching and in pastoral care. The Assistant must also be relatable to the other staff members at the Cathedral and be able to function effectively as a team member in order to accomplish our overall mission smoothly and effectively. The new assistant priest at All Saints’ will be someone who is a self-starter while working within the vision created by the Dean and Vestry. This person is one who can interact effectively with the diverse group of clergy, lay staff, ministry groups and volunteers. Under the leadership of the Dean, responsibilities include the following: Assist in planning and leading worship for Sundays and other worship opportunities. Take primary responsibility for midweek services and Taize services. Bring young people to Christ by being responsible for programming for youth, Sunday School and young adults in the parish and share in offering Christian education courses. Be the primary clergy contact with the Pastoral Care Ministry group, coordinating visiting schedules and conducting pastoral visits for anyone requiring them, including those at home, in hospitals, nursing homes and seniors’ homes, and conducting services as scheduled or needed. Share in responsibility for funerals and burials and bereavement counselling with families. Take primary responsibility for Thursdays at the Cathedral and be the liaison with the Social Justice Ministry group and its activities. Take primary responsibility for the day to day tasks of the caretaker and verger and the cleanliness of the Cathedral, hall and office spaces. Exhibit support for community engagement activities and other activities and worship opportunities taking place at the Cathedral. Be the liaison with students at NAIT, which includes about one day a week on campus. In order to be successful in this role the Assistant Priest will be a priest in good standing in your current diocese, and mature in your faith. You will have completed a curacy or have at least two years’ ordained parish experience. In addition to parish experience and priestly gifts, excellent written and oral communication skills, presentation and public speaking expertise, superior interpersonal skills, demonstrated facilitation and mediation capabilities, and well developed organization and time management skills are required. The Assistant Priest must have experience working within a team as well as the ability to work on his/her own with little direction, and proven leadership and decision making skills. The Assistant Priest needs to build networks, work collaboratively with diverse groups and a variety of partners and volunteers. The ability to see challenges and opportunities and work towards creative and innovative resolutions is essential. As the successful candidate, you will understand what our mission is, and you will have genuine enthusiasm for this parish and its mission; and you will sincerely want to minister here, with us.
