WEST MIDLANDS REGIONAL GENETICS LABORATORY (WMRGL) Research Scientist AfC Band 7 (fixed term for 12 months) Salary Scale: Band 7 £30,764-£40,558 per annum The West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory in Birmingham has a fixed-term vacancy for a research scientist. We are looking for an individual with an interest in laboratory genetics and the post would ideally suit an individual with both molecular genetics and cytogenetics / microarray experience, ideally in the field of molecular pathology or cancer research. The role will involve complex dataanalysis of cohorts of tumours profiled for somatic copy number and mutation detection and liaison with clinical, research and industrial collaborators. The WMRGL is the largest of the regional laboratories, delivering comprehensive genetic testing to 5.7 million people within the Midlands, approximately one tenth of the UK population. In addition we also provide tests for NHS and private hospitals both nationally and internationally, for university projects, and for industry. WMRGL currently performs in excess of 50,000 tests per annum employing over 200 scientific, technical and support staff in service delivery and research. The laboratory is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to ISO15189:2012 and is part of one of the genomic medicine centres in the Genomics England 100,000 genome project. Over the last 4 years WMRGL has significantly expanded its research portfolio, securing over £4 million of R&D funding for projects covering a diverse spectrum of genetic disorders including cancer, developmental delay, and prenatal testing for genetic abnormalities. The laboratory was selected as one of three Technology Hubs for the Cancer Research UK Stratified Medicine Programme. WMRGL also hosts the Central England Haemato-oncology and Oncology Research Biobank (CEHRB).
