ELAL Honors and AP Criteria for Grades 9-12
First time in an honors class (Entering grades 9 or 10)
Eligibility criteria for students entering grades 9 and 10 in Language Arts
Students who wish to be in an honors level course in English Language Arts Literacy for the
first time must meet the following requirements by demonstrating at least 4 of the 7 proficiency
levels listed below in addition to achieving a passing score on a PARCC English Language Arts
assessment:

NJASK score(s) at or above 240 in LAL from grades 7 or 8
MAP score(s) at or above the 60th percentile in Reading
Mid-Term grade of at least a B
Final exam grade of at least a B
A minimum projected grade of A- in the current Language Arts course
Teacher recommendation as defined in the following section
IRLA of at least Purple level (applies only to students entering grade 9)
PSAT score of at least 43 in one of the English Language Arts categories (applies
only to students entering grade 10)
Students entering grade 9 and 10 have 7 applicable criteria
First time in an honors class (Entering grades 11 or12)
Eligibility criteria for students entering grades 11 and 12 in Language Arts
Students who wish to be in an honors level course in English Language Arts Literacy for the
first time must meet the following requirements by demonstrating at least 5 of the 10
proficiency levels listed below in addition to achieving a passing score on a PARCC English

Requirement for Students in Honors to Continue in Honors Courses
Eligibility criteria for students continuing Honors in Language Arts in grades 10, 11 or 12
A student must demonstrate at least 5 of the 10 proficiency levels listed below:

Grade of B- or higher in the current honors class for the previous two marking
periods and/or final grade for the course

MAP score at or above the 60th percentile in Reading
Mid-Term grade of at least a B
Final exam grade of at least a B
PSAT score of at least 43 in one of the English Language Arts categories
SAT score of at least 450 in one of the English Language Arts categories
ACT Aspire score of at least 427 on the English/Reading Subject Matter Test
(transfer students)
Accuplacer - WritePlacer score of at least 6
For Enrollment in English AP Courses
Students are expected to take the corresponding English AP exam.
Eligibility for AP English Course:
A student must demonstrate at least 4 of the 9 proficiency levels listed below:
1.
Receive the recommendation of the current year’s content area teacher
2.
Grade of B or higher in the current honors class with no grades C or lower in any
marking period
3.
Mid-Term grade of at least B
4.
MAP score at or above the 60th percentile in Reading
5.
PSAT score of at least 43 in one of the English Language Arts categories
6.
SAT score of at least 550 Critical Reading or Writing.
7.
ACT Aspire score of at least 427 on the English/Reading Subject Matter Test
(transfer students)
8.
Accuplacer - WritePlacer score of at least 6
9.
Final exam grade of at least a B

The following areas must be considered and supported by teacher documentation:



The ability to organize work

Development and successful completion of a research paper

An acceptance of responsibility for timely completion of all assignments

Consistent production of high quality work

Active participation in discussion and oral presentations with a positive attitude

The ability to work well with others
