In addition to economic rodentia to human and plants will be discussed. This module requires practical work consists of at least 14 lab periods. In each lab period, several samples about the insect pest or its symptoms will be exposed. Small insects will be mounted on glass slides by each student. At least 25 samples about the symptoms of the economic insects are needed to be submitted by each student at the end of the course. Learning Objectives Knowledge and under standing. Be able to know biology and ecology of Economic Insects. Be able to determine pest diagnosis including damage, symptoms and identification for the pest. Be able to know different control methods to decrease pest population. Intellectual skills - with ability to: Identify the pest. Control the pest. 1 /6 Subject specific skills – with ability to: Use binocular microscope to see the main morphological characteristics for the different stages of the insect pest. Follow visually or by binocular microscope the main damage symptoms caused by the insect in the host. Draw scientific drawings for stages of the pests and main symptoms or a copy book to be submitted at the end of semester. Mount small insect pests on slides through temporarily or permanent media. Collect samples of infection symptoms drying them and keeping on certain drawing paper to be submitted at the end of semester. Transferable skills – with ability to: Work independently in private sector company dealing with importing, exporting and marketing pesticides. Work independently in governmental sector dealing with plant protection extensions and research. Work independently in public health insects, insects and rodentia control. Display an integrated pest management approach to control insect pests. Minimize the use of pesticides. Minimize the contamination of surrounding environment. Teaching methods: Duration: 16 weeks in the semester, 48 hours in total. Lectures: 32 hours, 2 per week “including midterm exam”. Laboratory: 15 lab periods, 3 hours per week “including a midterm exam and final exam”. Report: scientific drawing for the specimens exposed in the 15 lab periods to be reported in copy book. Assignments: in each lab period mounting small insects on glass slides. Project: 25 dry samples of infestation symptoms are required to be submitted.
