Ecosystems Unit Test – Friday, May 9, 2014
Students are responsible for keeping up with study guide. If a student needs another one it can be found
on Mrs. Cox’s webpage.
1. What is any organism that eats another organism? - Consumer
2. What shows the relationship between many different food chains in a single ecosystem? – Food Chain
3. What is a habitat? – Home or place an organism lives.
4. What is an organism’s niche? – It’s role and responsibilities (job) in an ecosystem.
5. What is an herbivore? Give some examples. – An animal that eats only plants – rabbits, deer
butterflies, cows, elephants
6. What is an omnivore? Give some examples. – An animal that eats both plants and animals – bears,
raccoons, pigs, chickens, PEOPLE
7. What is an carnivore? Give some examples. – An animal that eats only animals – foxes, coyotes,
snakes, frogs
8. Where would you most likely find a beaver? – wetland area
9. Two main types of ecosystems are? – Terrestrial (Land) and Aquatic (Water)
10. What would happen if decomposers were taken out of an ecosystem? – There would be dead plants
and animals everywhere and nutrients would not be returned to the soil for plants to grow.
11. Which land biome has very short summers with average temperatures about 34 degrees Fahrenheit
in the summer? - Tundra
12. Which land biome gets moderate rainfall and contains organisms like oak, maple and dogwood trees,
as well as deer, foxes and bears? – Temperate Forest
13. Which land biome has long winters and organisms such as pine trees, spruce trees, fir trees, elk,
rabbits and wolves? – Taiga
14. Which land biome gets very little rainfall and contains organisms like kangaroo rats, snakes, lizards,
sagebrush, and cacti? - Desert
15. Which land biome has low or seasonal rainfall, few trees, and animals like bison, antelope, and prairie
dogs? - Grasslands
16. Which land biome is very humid with a thick plant growth forming a canopy and is located near the
equator? – Tropical Rainforest
17. What must be at the beginning of every food chain? - Producer
18. What do producers in a community do? – Make food using energy from the sun (photosynthesis)
19. The types and numbers of animals in an ecosystem are determined by the types and number of
_______________________ in an ecosystem. - plants
20. What is an estuary? – where fresh water and salt water mix
21. Which biome contains saltwater and organisms such as coral, sharks, and seaweed. – Marine (ocean)
22. What is the order of the energy pyramid? – Producers  First Level Consumers  Second Level
Consumers  Third Level Consumers (Most organisms will be at the top and few organisms at
the bottom).
23. What uses sunlight to make the food they need from carbon dioxide and water? – Producers (plants)
24. What are decomposers? Give some examples. – Organisms that break down dead organisms which
enrich the soil (mold, bacteria, fungus)
25. What are consumers? Give some examples. – Organisms that can’t make their own food; eat other
plants and animals (dogs, cats, humans)
26. What are producers? Give some examples. – Organisms that make food and oxygen for animals
(plants or trees)
27. Energy is passed through communities by way of: - Food Chain
