During a discussion of family history circa 1970’s, Michael disclosed that he had
changed the Polish usage of female names from the – ska ending to the –ski ending.
You will see these changes reflected in the Ahnenetafel and Pedigree charts. He told
me (Mary McCartney) that he was doing this because he thought it would be less
confusing to future generations. I have reverted back to the original –ska ending for
female Polish names, until the custom of using –ski endings for all children was
adopted in the United States after 1926.
Michael notes the year of Janina Jaskulska’s immigration as circa 1915. I recall my
mother, Irene McCartney, telling me that Janina immigrated prior to the outbreak of
WW I, which began in 1914. Due to the outbreak of the War, she was not able to return
to Poland, and no additional Polish siblings were able to join Janina and Marion in the
United States. Consequently, I have modified the immigration date as circa 1914.
(7) Irene Janet Kotynski (see #14 and #15) was born June 18, 1926 at Nazareth Hospital,
Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. She married Michael John McCartney Jr (see #6 and #13),
son of Michael John McCartney Sr. and Gertrude Teresa Fox on May 6, 1950 at St. Joseph
Church, Hammond, Lake County, Indiana, USA.

“I was born at 9:28 pm at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. My parents
lived at 2731 N. Marmora Avenue. {Certificate of Birth #27896, Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois, District #3104 . When I was one year old, my parents moved from Chicago to
Hammond, Indiana, where Dad started developing his architectural business. We lived
on Hohman Avenue. I started kindergarten at a school two blocks away. I loved Mrs.
Mahlman, my teacher, who was very kind. When I was ten, Henry eight and George five,
we were all baptized at St. Joseph Church, on Hohman Avenue. My godmother was Cecilia
(Chessia) Glazer. Then we started at St. Joseph School, too; we previously had gone to a
public school.

Communion as a Roman Catholic on the same day. Also see the Pastel drawing Mary

finger. It is one of the few items that Irene’s mother, Janina Jaskulsa, brought from
Poland.}
“I remember the 1933 Depression very well – we couldn’t even have a penny for candy.
Bread was 5 cents a loaf. All the people talked about was the Depression. I never
remember going hungry, however. I do not remember any specific toys – but my biggest
joy was getting wooden orange crates, taking them apart and building things. Marble
shooting and jumping rope were my biggest pastimes.
“When I graduated from 8th grade, I got my first bike, and spend hours riding it in
Harrison Park, going up and down the hills. Dad got a job working for the WPA (Works
Progress Administration) teaching mechanical drawing at a local high school in the
Evenings. I took sewing lessons from a WPA teacher, and piano lessons from Mrs.
Holloway. I started High School at St. Joseph’s Girls Academy, for two years, then had
one year at Central Catholic, and went my senior year to Hammond High School.
“For two years, I worked at a Naval Office in South Chicago, traveling by the South Shore
Railroad, where they built LSM’s. {?} After they closed it after World War II, I worked at
City Hall in Hammond (Indiana) as Secretary to the City Engineer. I went to Indiana
University Extension night school for three years.
“ We got married in May, 1950, and I quit work at the end of the year, as I was expecting
our first child. Michael and I had an apartment the first two months of our marriage, but
Dad got worse after his stroke, so we moved in with Mom at 4434 Sheffield Avenue
{Hammond, Indiana}. Dad died a month before Mike was born in March, 1951. Mother
died in January 1955.
“With three children, Michael and I were discussing how we could move into a trailer
on Purdue or Indiana University campus while he got his Master’s Degree. However,

we discovered Chris was on the way, and Michael decided to take a job in Detroit,
Michigan, with Detroit Testing Lab. It was hard for us to say good-bye to Ginny and Ed;
they were our closest friends, and the only family on my side. The plus of moving to
East Detroit was that we’d be closer to Dad’s family in Pittsburgh {Pennsylvania}. And to
think that I thought then that 230 miles was far away! Now my children are thousands of
miles away.
“In 1961, Dad took a position with Owens-Illinois in Toledo, Ohio. John was born March
8th, Dad started his new job April 1st, and spent the first four weeks traveling, seeing the
various O-I plants. When we moved to Toledo in May, we had to leave John in the
hospital in Detroit, and go back and get him after we were settled. He had a bowel
intussusception. We bought our home on Woodbine in 1962, and Kathy {Marie
Kathleen} was born in 1963. This is 1989 – and my oldest is 38! And Baby will be 26!
“The years went by too quickly, as is this two month vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, from
February 10th to April 10th. We’ve spent many hours reflecting on our life together, and
considering what to do now. Being blessed with independent children spread all over
the country, fair health, and now eligible for Social Security and pension, we ask the
Lord’s help that we will be able to enjoy more years of love and joy together.”

residence was Piotrkow, Poland. He travelled on the steamship line F. MISSLER,
RUSWANDERNOS-UNTERNEAMER”. Form filled out by A.S. Kotynski, signed by Walenty
Jaskulski, 1708 Ruble St. Chicago.
His son Marion, in an interview April 2, 1977, {with Michael McCartney} told how Walenty
came to the US:
“ In 1905, the family was living in Chestochowa, Poland. After the Russo-Japanese war,
there was a depression. They move to Piotrkow, a ‘Tribunal City’. The mother,
Michalina, started a grocery store to keep food for the family, and was doing ‘rather
well.’ The father, Walenty, had been a general contractor. He asked Michalina to put
up the store as security for a loan of 3000 rubles, to ‘fund’ his attempt to get the
contract for construction of a large new public building. Michalina, from past
experience, was afraid they’d lose everything, so she refused. Walenty got upset, gave
the scaffolding and other equipment to his foreman (in lieu of wages, etc.?), and left
‘without even saying goodbye.’
He came to the U.S. to see a brother-in-law (husband of Michalina’s sister?) who had
also left his wife, and was living in Chicago. Marion thinks the name was Vincent
Kleinert. {Note in the preceding paragraph he was recorded as “going to visit Wincent
Klainet, in Chicago, Ill.”} “Kleinert was an ‘old-world cabinetmaker’, Walenty a
general contractor, but neither could get ‘proper’ work in the US. Walenty spoke both
‘High German and Low German’ very well, as well as Polish and Russian. (Marion
thinks he also spoke French.)
In the US Walenty worked as a laborer, ditch-digger, etc. In the Depression, about
1932, he had no work; Marion was by this time working as a model maker, and wanted
to help his father. The father still had not filed for citizenship, so the got A.S. Kotynski
to help, and together filled out the preliminary forms. Marion doesn’t think it went
any further. Their efforts to help didn’t mean much – Walenty just did not want to live
with anyone else, etc. He was about 70 then. Walenty was an only child, according to
Marion Jaskulski. Walenty Jaskulski Death Certificate Illinois State File #74972,
