How does the adaptive algorithm work in the placement test?
To quickly find missing skills from common core standards in grades kindergarten to eight, we employ many strategies. For example, we present "key" problems from each common core
domain area that represent the most difficult skills in that domain. If a student fails these key problems, we present problems for each of the standards in the domain. The placement test will
automatically end when a student has missed more than 60% of the standards they have been given. For example, if a student misses 10% of the objectives in Kindergarten, 20% of the
objectives in 1st grade, and 31% of the objectives in 2nd grade, they will finish the second grade objectives and the placement test will automatically end.
What is the difference between a "Just missing skills" and "Test all skills"
placement test?
A "Just missing skills" test only tests standards that the student has not yet mastered. As such, the "Just missing skills" test takes much less time than a complete placement test. For example,
if a student has 100% proficiency in grades one through three and has a 90% proficiency in 4th grade and a 40% proficiency in fifth grade, the interim test will start with the standards
comprising the missing 10% of skills in fourth grade and then continue with the remaining 60% missing skills in fifth grade.
A "Test all skills" test is the same as the initial placement test. The complete test is adaptive, which means the test quickly assesses skills in early grades that a student has mastered and only
"dives down" into more detailed assessments in areas a student does not know well.

What are MobyMax Assessments?
MobyMax Assessments are customizable grade level, standard, and skill tests. You can use these assessments to test students' mastery of specific concepts periodically throughout the year.
MobyMax Assessments are different from placement tests. Placement tests are adaptive, formative assessments intended to identify a student's skill gaps. Because placement tests are
adaptive, it's unlikely a student will take the same test twice, and the questions answered are not visible to teachers. Assessments, alternatively, are non-adaptive tests that teachers can tailor
to particular grades, standards, or skills. Because they focus on less material, assessments tend to be shorter in length. Both placement tests and assessments can be assigned throughout the
year at any time if the teacher has a MobyMax Pro license, and both will affect progress monitoring data.
To assign a new assessment, simply complete the following steps:
1. After signing in, click the subject area button, (e.g., "Math," "Language," etc.)
2. Click "Assessments."
3. Check the box(es) next to the student(s) to whom you would like to assign assessments.
4. Click the "Assign New Test" button.
5. Choose a test type.
6. Select the grade level, standards, or skills, and then click the "Assign" button.
Students can access their assessments by signing into their account and clicking on the "Tests" button.
How to enter fractions in MobyMax
When entering fractions, all equivalent fractions or decimals will be marked as correct unless the problem directs students to enter the answer in a specified form (e.g., "enter your answer as a
mixed number"). For example, if the answer is 1/2, they can enter 1/2, .5, .5000000, 4/8, etc.

What is Number Sense?
MobyMax Number Sense lays a strong foundation for math concepts by building basic numeracy skills. In a dynamic lab environment, students begin at Part One (basic number line skills) and
progress through five parts of increasingly complex skills using manipulatives. A helpful “Hint” button on the student dashboard guides the student through the exercises, and teachers can
track student progress on the individual and class level.
Advanced Number Sense modules use the abacus, an ancient tool that allows students to add and subtract numbers at lightning speed. Adding and subtracting on the abacus will likely be a bit
unfamiliar to students at first, but it's a great way for students to build comprehensive knowledge of numbers.

What is Vocabulary?
Moby Vocabulary is a web-based vocabulary learning tool with nearly 7,000 "high utility" practice words. Students take an adaptive placement test to identify their current vocabulary level and
then are quizzed on words in that level. When a student does not know a word, it becomes a part of their word list.
Moby teaches new words in a variety of ways, using definitions, pictures, and sentences to help students learn word meaning. Students practice new words daily for a given amount of time
(we recommend five days, but you can change this if you like). After the words have been "learned," Moby will spiral back to them periodically to ensure that the student retains knowledge of
the word.
How did you create your word list?
Our lower-level words (grade levels 1-4) come from published research on frequently used words and words that are necessary to be a successful reader and writer in each grade level.
Our upper-level words (grade levels 5-7) are from common vocabulary lists, SAT vocabulary, and research. They are based less on frequency of use and more on the goal developing a wide
vocabulary for older students.

What's the difference between Reading Stories and Reading Skills?
Reading Stories is designed to evaluate a student's overall reading comprehension. Students read grade level fiction and nonfiction texts and answer questions that cover all grade level
standards. Reading Stories does not include lessons or targeted instruction.
Reading Skills is designed to give students lessons and practice on individual reading skills. Students are introduced to grade level reading skills with "Teach Me" lessons and complete practice
sets on individual skills. Most texts in this module are shorter in order to focus on the particular skills being targeted.
How can students view their Short Answer grades?
After you grade student Short Answer responses, students can review their scores by clicking the "Short Answer" button on the student dashboard.
