Press release 7th May 2014 ANOTHER WHITE GLOVE SALE FOR JOHN WOODMAN HIGGINS ARMORY COLLECTION AUCTION. 100% SOLD TODAY AT THOMAS DEL MAR LTD (IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOTHEBY’S) WITH KNIGHTS IN ARMOUR RIDING HOME. TOTAL: £830,000 (including premium). The style and content of the second Higgins Armory deaccession sale held today, 7 th May, had many different aspects from last year. The first deaccession sale of 2013 of over 400 lots was extremely diverse with a very large number of lower value objects. This year, the sale was smaller in quantity, (with 327 lots) but with a larger amount of good calibre principally traditional European arms and armour. IMAGE LEFT: The 19th century boy’s armour in 16th century German style, belonged to the wealthy newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, inspiration to Orson Welles’s film Citizen Cane. It sold for £19,200 (Estimate: £10,000 - £15,000). The tall armour is a composite South German cap-a-pie field armour, partly Nuremberg, circa 1540, which sold for £30,000. (Estimate: £15,000- £20,000). Together they made a total of £49,200 (including premium). The pre-sale view was extremely well attended, as last year, resulting in a very large number of commission bids and paddle registries. The sale was also very well viewed online with a substantial increase of interest from last year, notably in English speaking countries. Thomas Del Mar comments ‘we were delighted to be able to repeat the remarkable success of the 2013 sale. Selling for a total of £830,000 (including premium), in excess of the sum of the low and high estimates with no unsolds. The market continues to be strongly driven by quality and good provenance which was a prevalent theme throughout.’ There are are mainly full armours in the top 10 lots, so to give a broader view of the variety in the sale please see the following pages for results from the top 20 lots which include sculpture and paintings.
