MINUTES MIRAMAR COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP TASKFORCE Laura T. González, Chair Room L-107 04.15.14 Present: Laura Gonzalez, Andy Lowe, Terhea Williams, AnnaLiza Soriano, Wayne Cherry, Virginia Naters I. Meeting convened 2:00 PM II. New Business A. No new business was added to the agenda. III. Reports A. Laura Gonzalez reported back on the subject of native plants on campus. Roy Kinley and Christoph Emery replied to the inquiry as to whether there were any native plants on campus. There are several designated areas with natives on campus, including the future Science building landscaping. Terhea Williams suggested plants be placed on campus that would be specimen plants for the Biology students to use as part of the curriculum. L. Gonzalez suggested Terhea make a list of plants that would be beneficial for this purpose. B. We discussed the Vernal Pools on campus and the development of the Vernal Pool Interpretive Park. C. L. Gonzalez reports that Dane Lindsay and the facilities staff have distributed tubs to the battery collection areas. Joan Mize kindly created a campus map with areas showing the drop off locations. We will request a few changes to the map before sending it out on the DL. D. L. Gonzalez reports that she saw recycling signs at Mesa College that seemed effective. They read something like “Is it sticky? Is it oily? Throw it in the trash!” She will contact Michelle Rodrigues from Mesa’s Sustainability committee to see if we can borrow this phrasing. IV. Unfinished Business A. Earth Day 2014 – L. Gonzalez reported that her and several other classes’ Honors students will be hosting a “ Teach In” presentation series on Thursday April 24th in L-105 from 10-12:30. Another one of her students will be setting up a temporary student art project with the topic of Vernal Pools. A. Lowe reports that the Science Club is also going to participate with a table and activities. B. Commencement Stoles – A. Lowe reported that the bookstore will be ordering the stoles with the EST logo and they should arrive before Commencement. C. Sustainability Scholarship – We finalized the details of the proposed scholarship. L. Gonzalez will ask Michelle at Mesa ESC whether they have a scholarship as well. L. Gonzalez will take the paperwork to Lonnie Pham for processing. V. New Business VI. Adjournment 3:00 PM
