SUMMER READING 2013 Dear Parent or Guardian, Key Largo Middle School students have read thousands of books this school year and we want all our students to maintain their progress by continuing to read over the summer. With this goal in mind, we have a summer reading program that encourages students to read at least two books over the summer and complete a book report for each book. When students return at the beginning of the school year, they will turn in their reports and take the AR tests on the books they have read. Key Largo School is a school that loves and values reading. In middle school, students are encouraged to try a variety of genres (types) of books and develop their own taste in literature. KLS is fortunate to have the Accelerated Reader (AR) computer program. This is an online program with tests for over 10,000 books. Each student has his/her own AR account and every time a student reads a book, he/she takes an AR test to check for comprehension. The AR program maintains a record for each student including the reading level of each book and the student’s comprehension score. We want to keep students excited about reading. Students are allowed to select any books they want for summer reading as long as it is on their reading level – not too easy or not too hard. We have attached a list of the new Sunshine State Titles to give students a head start as well as some “golden oldies.” These are only suggestions as students are encouraged to select books that interest them. Please visit: justreadfamilies.org and make the pledge to ensure that your child does not lose precious skills over the summer. This site also has other helpful information for parents. Thank you, The Middle School Reading Team *Please keep this half of the letter for later reference. Cut here--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I understand that reading is important and that I am expected to read at least two books over the summer break.
