Davisson 1 Kailee Davisson 2 June 2012 Children’s Story The Beauty of Amethyst Once upon a time in a beautiful kingdom there lived a mighty king and his most treasured and precious daughter, Amethyst, who was the most beautiful girl in the entire kingdom. She was named after her mother’s rare deep purple jewel that was not only beautiful on the outside but also shone its beauty through its inside. When her mother had died after giving birth to Amethyst, her father tried finding a nanny to take care of her while he was busy working. The chosen nanny who was very evil, disguised herself quite well and casted a horrible spell upon the princess that every night when the sun would set, Amethyst’s unbelievable beauty would turn into something quite plain and ugly. Amethyst grew older and her beauty shone brighter every day, but duller every night. On one gloomy, wet afternoon, her father grew very ill. He was no longer able to stand, and spent all his days lying in bed worrying about what was to become of the kingdom and his precious daughter. “Amethyst is growing old enough it is time for her to find a husband to break her spell and become king when I am gone,” said the king to himself. So the next day he called out to his nurse to help him out onto his balcony to make an announcement to all the bachelors of the kingdom. “Attention all bachelors of the kingdom! As you all know I am growing old and becoming weaker every day. I will need a worthy man to take my place when I am gone. In two days time there will be a race around the kingdom on horseback. The first three finalists will be eligible for marrying my beautiful daughter and becoming king.” When the anticipated day came, all of the bachelors had practiced for hours ahead of Davisson 2 time, all except one. He was a farmer’s boy, named Peter, who had nothing but the clothes on his back and his one little horse who he was to ride in the big race. The rest of the bachelors were strong, rugged and handsome. The race began and all of the men pushed their horses as hard as they could while the farmer’s boy just let his horse go as it liked. Horses along with their riders were collapsing left and right from exhaustion and being pushed too hard. When the finalists came in, everyone was shocked to see that the farmer’s boy was one of them, but cheered anyways, for the other two were very strong and handsome. Very early next day, the finalists returned to the castle to see what challenge the king had for them next. When they arrived, the king told them to go out and search far and wide for the most beautiful leaf they could find and the one who comes back with the most beautiful leaf shall marry my daughter and become king. They all set out right away. The two strong and handsome ones went as far as their eyes could see running as fast as they could, stopping for nothing in their way. Peter went in a quite opposite direction into the forest by which his father’s farm was. He had spent most of his days there, pondering and enjoying the beauty of it. As he was walking, he came across a butterfly. He waved and said, “Hello there! I am to find the most beautiful leaf of the kingdom, do you have any idea where this could be?” The butterfly replied in great pleasure, “you’re in the right place! The most beautiful leaf that I have ever landed on is over that hill over there, past the big evergreen and to your right you should find a tree that the sun shines the brightest upon. The most beautiful leaf is upon that tree.” The boy was quite pleased and said thank you as the butterfly fluttered away. He found his way to the tree where the sun shone the brightest. He then saw the most beautiful golden leaf he had ever laid eyes upon. It was not bigger than the palm of his hand. He hurried back to the castle so that he may show the king the beautiful leaf that he had found. When he returned the king asked the three of them to show Davisson 3 him the beautiful leaves. He looked at the first and it was dead. He looked at the second and it was too big. He looked at the third which was Peter’s and said, “This is the most beautiful leaf I have ever seen! Who found this?” Peter raised his hand. The king a little hesitant at the farmer’s boy becoming king, decided to set them out on another quest. “Go out, search however far and wide you’d like, and find the most precious stone you can find.” The two strong and handsome ones ran out as fast as they could, and stopped for nothing in their way, while Peter went back to the beautiful forest. As he was walking along he came across a ladybug. “Hello there,” he said, “I am to find the most precious stone I can find, do you have any idea where this could be?” The ladybug replied in such happiness, “of course! Look under that bush right over there, and you shall find the most precious stone that I have ever come across.” Peter got down on the ground and peaked under the bush to see the most beautiful and precious stone he had ever seen! He rushed back to the castle to show the king right away. The king looked at the first two stones that were very plain. Then he saw the last stone that looked identical to the one that hung around his passed wife’s neck, which Amethyst was named after. It was deep purple and beautifully shone from the inside out. The king in such pleasure asked who had found that precious jewel. The farmer’s boy raised his hand. The king was amazed but still quite hesitant at this boy marrying his daughter and becoming king of the entire kingdom. So he decided to set them all three out on one more quest as the sun was setting. “Go out and search as far and wide as you like, this is the final and last quest. Find the most beautiful thing you can find, it can be anything. The man who returns with the most beautiful thing shall marry my daughter and become king.” The two strong and handsome men set out as fast as they could, stopping for nothing in their way, while Peter returned to the beautiful and kind forest. As he was walking through the forest, he heard some voices coming from a little cottage nearby. He crept over and peaked into the window, there was Davisson 4 a girl in rags who was quite plain and an older lady with her two daughters. The plain girl was handing them fruit and bread from her basket and a big warm quilt. She was very kind and spoke with the lady and her daughters for quite some time. It became dark very soon and the girl decided it was time to go, so she said her goodbyes and left. As she came out of the cabin, Peter stopped her and asked her name. “I should not say.” “That’s ok,” he replied, “I’m Peter!” “It’s a pleasure to meet you Peter, I best be going now.” “Wait! What were you doing in that cabin?” “I was giving them some food and a warm blanket. It gets cold here at night.” “How do you know them?” “I know everyone around here, I like to come to the cottages around here when the sun sets and give them food and other things they need. They don’t have much.” “That’s very kind of you.” “Thank you. I must be going now!” Peter thought to himself of how amazing this girl is to come here every night to give to the poor. What a beautiful thing that is, what a beautiful person she is. “Come back!” he called to her. “I must go, I am late!” “You are a beautiful person, please come with me so that I may show the king the most beautiful thing in the kingdom.” After some struggle, the girl agreed and walked back to the castle with the boy. When they arrived, the sun was soon to rise, as the king came out to see the most beautiful things in all the Davisson 5 land. The first boy had brought a daisy. “This is beautiful, but I see these every day in my garden,” said the king. He looked to see what the second boy had brought, it was a fairy locked up in a bottle. “This fairy is beautiful, but you have locked her up and she is crying! Release her at once!” Disappointed, he finally turned to see what Peter had brought, when something peculiar began to happen. The girl that Peter had brought to show the king rose into the air and was surrounded by shimmery deep purple fog. When she came back down, Peter was shocked to see that it was the princess! The two other boys yelled out, “he cheated!” and “of course she is the most beautiful, but you did not say we could bring her back!” The king was amazed that Peter had brought back Amethyst as most beautiful while she was so plain and ugly. “Why did you bring her back when you did not know it was her, Peter?” he asked. “She is the most beautiful on the inside, she is the most kind and thoughtful person I have ever met,” replied Peter. “ “Peter, you have brought me not only things that were beautiful on the outside but you have seen the beauty within. That is the most important. You shall marry my daughter and become king when I am gone.” The princess was very happy, for not only being with someone who sees her beautiful in every way but also, her curse shall be broken when they become married because she has found someone who would love her in every way, every day. When the king passed, the precious Amethyst and Peter became the most beloved King and Queen ever to rule the beautiful kingdom. The End.
