Self-Respect & Respect for Others: Our key to Success! Greetings from the Media Center! We are off to a great school year as students are checking out lots of books and scoring lots of AR points. If your student is in 1st-4th grade, they are already reading Accelerated Reader books and taking a short computerized quiz when they are done. We do have some kindergarten students reading AR books, and as the year progresses, many of them will begin the AR program. At the end of the first semester, the student with the most AR points from each grade level will receive a $10 gift card to Books a Million. At the end of the second semester, the prize is a $25 gift card, with one student receiving an additional $25 gift card for having the most AR points in the school. Sometimes there is only ½ point separating the top 2 students, so please encourage your student to keep on reading!!! Each child should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per day at home. Thanks to your support, we had a very successful Book Fair!!! The funds earned will be used to purchase new books for the Media Center. I already have a long list of books that I want to get for our students and will begin ordering them very soon. I would like to give a special thank-you to our wonderful Book Fair volunteers who helped to keep the Book Fair running so smoothly! They are: Mrs. Boisvert, Mrs. Martinez, Mrs. Hilland, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs. Ballard, Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Stamm, Mrs. Bates, Mrs. Munoz, Mrs. Agner, Mrs. Saffo, Mrs. Carr, and Mrs. Foster. The School Store is located in the Media Center and is open daily except for the times that the Book Fair is here. The store contains such items as pencils, erasers, folders, notebook paper, and crayons. We also have begun selling poster board if your student has a project that they are working on. Prior to the Science Fair, display boards will also be sold. Students really enjoy shopping on their own and are receiving a real world experience in counting money and understanding concepts such as more and less. Items range in price from 10 cents to $2. For our younger students, it is recommended that school store money be in an envelope marked School Store to avoid any confusion. The funds generated by the School Store are also used to purchase new student books. Once again thanks for all of your support! Keeping kids healthy, Erika Turovsky Health Tech. Eglin E.S. Music classes include experiences with singing, playing instruments, moving, listening and creating. The musical concepts that are studied include rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expressive qualities and style. Children will experience traditional American folk songs in addition to a variety of world music, and pieces in many styles. Lessons will lead toward note reading and music literacy. Music lessons are fast-paced and fun, and students will need to wear comfortable clothing in order to participate fully. Primary students do a lot of moving in order to internalize the steady beat and the intermediate students will need to sit on the floor to perform on the mallet percussion instruments. October: Song of the Month: America Unit: Rhythm Style: Baroque Composer: Antonio Vivaldi Ice Cream!!! The cafeteria will be selling ice cream ala carte on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The price is 75 cents. Students will need to bring additional money. Come on let’s turkey trot!!! Timeline Project: Mrs. Anderson’s first graders learned about things that changed over time as well as timelines during their Social Studies time. Each student was tasked with creating a timeline of their own life which they presented to the class. The first picture in their timeline was the day they were born. Other ideas were first words, first tooth, first steps, vacations, etc. After choosing which ideas they wanted to implement, the students placed their photos in chronological order and prepared a timeline display. What a great project! Way to go first graders! Recently in an Okaloosa County School District Math competition, Eglin students achieved 2nd place. Eglin had 80 students participate in the Sumdog Math Challenge, which tests student fluency in Math operations. Overall, district students did an amazing 246,272 problems with 205, 903 correct answers! Eglin won the first day’s competition and led most of the week. Jessica Merz, a third grader in Mr. Wilson’s class, finished 6th in the county, scoring 854 correct answers out of 1000 problems completed. Even though only 80 Eagles were entered, Eglin still had 7 out of the top 50 students in the competition. Congratulations to all the students who took part! We know that practicing your math will help you achieve your goals this year, and we’re looking forward to snagging the top prize in the contest next time! Pictured here: Mrs. Bill’s class Third Grade Writers: Pictured here: Rylie Poulin In an effort to spur creative writing, several third grade teachers created outdoor displays to go along with their writing prompts. Students were taken through the process of drafting, proofing, editing, and then the final copy of their writing. Ms. McArdle’s students wrote stories about Halloween and a haunted castle. Even the edges of their papers were burned to simulate old parchment paper. The writing prompt for Mrs. Laney’s students was If I were a ghost for a day…… Upon returning to the classroom, Mrs. Bill’s First Grade class conducted a pumpkin investigation as you can see in the photo below. The students measured the pumpkins with Unifix cubes, counted the lines on the pumpkin, and guessed whether the pumpkins would sink or float. Finally, they counted all the seeds. Worms! We Have Worms!!! Pictured here: Ms. McArdle’s display Pictured here: Keeley Brown Pictured here: Mrs. Laney’s display Pumpkins, Pumpkins in the Patch! Eglin Elementary kindergartners and first graders had a wonderful time at the Mary Esther pumpkin patch recently. Pictured here: Malachi Stott Pictured below: Mrs. Anderson’s class Sumdog Math Challenge Mrs. Chavers’ third grade class recently spent an afternoon as zoologists as they explored earthworms. As they studied the earthworms, they discovered such things as do worms make tunnels, have teeth, crawl above ground, have eyes and noses, prefer damp or dry places, and whether they could tell the worm’s head from its tail. They also counted the segments in their earthworms and located the tiny bristles under each segment that act like little legs.
